I had a similar set of symptoms a year ago. I did the "second hard drive"
solution and it was quite successful.

Hard drives are so cheap now that you can plug one in, install your OS, and
set the old drive to a slave. I gradually re-installed most of my critical
apps to the new drive and removed them from the old one. This left the old
one as a "data" drive, which could be backed up regularly. Without the OS
access on it, it's been well behaved so far. I expect it to hurl any day,
but until it does it'll work fine....

That reminds me, time for a backup tonight. Watch the damned thing fry on
me before it completes....
