Just to clarify, you reckon I'm encouraging anti-cyclist sentiment by
attacking idiot drivers, but Clarkson saying he''s run over and kill
cyclists for a laugh is perfectly acceptable?

Just to clarify, the *way* you are attacking idiot drivers is
encouraging anti-cyclist sentiment, because it is a display of
undisguised and emotional hatred. That never goes down well in the UK,
and if it comes from a cyclist then that's bad for cyclists.

I don't think what JC said in the Sun was "perfectly acceptable", what
I'm saying is entirely /predictable/ if people persist in rising to the
bait, because that's what it is. It's bait. And when it's taken it
makes "entertainment" and in turn money, so it carries on. So if you
want it to stop then you stop taking the bait.

Third time of asking, show me any post where I've encouraged using
vehicles as weapons against other people or anything like it.

If a broadcaster encourages assaults on cyclists then I'll call them a
gutless coward. Your blaming me for the original outburst takes the
biscuit, stop making a fool of yourself.

  3. Call it political correctness, call it over-sensitivity, but as a
cyclist I object to journalists encouraging people to run me over.

I don't run red lights, but I do think the death penalty for those who
do is rather over the top.

    Spate of attacks on Oxford's
cyclists "Jeremy Clarkson-types" who resent cyclists' ability to dodge
traffic could be to blame for a series of incidents in which riders
have been attacked in and around a city, a cycling pressure group said
    today.

The warning came as a 26-year-old man was shoved from his bike in
Abingdon, south of Oxford, sustaining bruising and cuts to his knees,
    elbows and hips.

I have never suggested you have done, so however many times you ask

I'm not blaming you for "the original outburst", I'm pointing out that
the way you react with additional foaming at the gills isn't actually
    useful to anyone.

    Are you claiming:

    (a) that nothing of the sort ever happened before J Clarkson came to
    fame? or

    (b) that any of the above can be shown (the word is *shown*, not

There have been attacks on cyclists.

Clarkson endorses such attacks in a paper read by 8 million.

    Take Jim Davidson.

Suppose racist attacks were on the increase and Davidson wrote in The
    Sun:

"Blacks. Don't get in my way or I'll kill you".

    Would this:

    1/

Raise the likelihood of racist attacks?

    2/

Decrease the likelihood of racist attacks?

When actors leave Corrie the producers get CV's from barmen who want a
    job in the Rovers.

Quite a few teenagers have been badly hurt copying Jackass stunts.

    But Clarkson has no influence?

    I should cocoa.

have an effect on how that criticism is received and reacted to and thus
    how useful it is.

There you go again: I don't feel differently in as much as some
intervention may be apposite, *BUT* "intervention" does not have a
single value, there are different ways one can go about doing it.

But you're so perpetually /angry/ about things that you can never calm
down enough to see that. That you manage to [censored] people that
/should be on your side/ is just an indication that you really could do
with stopping and thinking about the way you go about cycling activism.

I'm not angry, I'm amused and slightly peckish.

And I honestly still don't get it- you maintain, contradictorily,
    that:

    a)

My internet burblings encourage hatred of cyclists.

    b)

Clarkson threatening cyclists in print has no effect.

Projection, I reckon, you don't particularly like me so you claim
people like me who attack irresponsible drivers do a misservice. Deal
with it old darling, just try to cope as best you can cos I ain't
    stopping.

I don't think my posts encourage anything at all really, and
criticising bad drivers is a world away from the posts on pistonheads
and Safespeeding fantasising about killing cyclists- complain to them
    if you like.

Spindrift, sometimes you can be a complete muppet.

You posted this by pasting in a quote from a random message in the
thread, but you used the reply button when you were looking at my
post. Coincidentally, my message was about how it is possible to post
correctly from Google Groups. A tip:
In 'options' select 'veiw as tree'. This will show you how the
different posts relate to each other, and helps you navigate round the
thread. Please don't just stick posts in random places - reply to the
post containing the bit you're referring to. It makes life much easier
    for everyone.

    Thanks

I'm a vegetarian cyclist who can, but chooses never to, drive who does
on occasion (i.e. during winter!) wear odd head gear, some of which has
been know to incorporate a bobble or two.

Merely as a data point I'd like to say I find Clarkson extremely funny
and watch Top Gear every week; it has never occurred to me to take him
or any of the rest of the daft banter seriously.

On the other hand I find your desperate spittle-doused fulminations

The way that you express your views does you no favours. If people here
find you irritating then just how seriously do you think you'll be taken
    by non-cyclists? You present as a self-righteous indignant bobble-hat-
wearing vegan crusader[1], just the sort of image that cyclists want to
avoid if cycling is to be accepted as a viable means of transport and
health improvement rather than a crank lifestyle choice.

If someone is irritated by criticism of irresponsible drivers to the
extent of taking it out on cyclists, a pretty bizarre notion, then
Clarkson's words are doubly irresponsible and deserve the criticism. I
    eat bacon.

On the other hand I find your desperate spittle-doused fulminations
rather irritating and hope to heaven no one will ever tar me with your
    brush.

Anyway. Toodle pip - must get the silly hat on to ride home.

Frothing at the gills AND spittle-flecked, quite a trick.

Once again, I doubt whether you would attack anyone just because a fat
boorish minor celebrity endorses attacking people Sara, I'm just not
sure there isn't at least a few Sun readers who aren't at your irony
    detection level.

From The Sun discussion pages, an example of Clarkson's audience:

There you go again: I don't feel differently in as much as some

I'm not angry, I'm amused and slightly peckish.

And I honestly still don't get it- you maintain, contradictorily,
    that:

    a)

My internet burblings encourage hatred of cyclists.

    b)

Clarkson threatening cyclists in print has no effect.

Projection, I reckon, you don't particularly like me so you claim
people like me who attack irresponsible drivers do a misservice. Deal
with it old darling, just try to cope as best you can cos I ain't
    stopping.

I don't think my posts encourage anything at all really, and
criticising bad drivers is a world away from the posts on pistonheads
and Safespeeding fantasising about killing cyclists- complain to them
if you like.- Hide quoted text -

Quite. Someone like nulhq, for instance? I'd suggest people who
rejoice at the murder of muslim girls are not the kind of people to
take Clarkson's encouragement of violence as a joke. The funny thing
is, the bouffant buffoon did make a programme about VC winners that
was interesting and well made. At the end Clarkson says he never met
the incredibly brave chap the programme was about, which was a shame,
he said, because he is both fascinated by the story of how the VC was
won by the brave soldier, and he married his daughter. (Although the
reason Clarkson punched Piers Morgan in the head was cos The Mirror
had snaps of Clarkson and a lady who was not his wife... )
