  1. I don't know if anyone likes to give to charity, but I give to a few. One
charity I like is The Elephant Sanctuary. The sanctuary rescues old,
mistreated elephants from circuses and zoos and provides them with a
beautiful home. Here's a link. http://elephants.com. They are currently
trying to raise 1,000,000 to rescue 6 additional elephants who were horribly
mistreated by the Hawthorn corporation. I thought that I would post this
info here and see if there were any other elephant lovers who wanted to give
something. Even if you don't, check out the site and check out the ele-cam.
    It's so cool.

Hm, so, it takes about 166,000 dollars to save one old elephant.

The same amount of money could be used to save 100 starving children,
    easily.

Is that the charity YOU give to?

What do you suggest? Kill the old elephants and make umbrella stands
out of their legs? Jeez, not all the money has to go toward starving
    children.

Personally, I donate to the Humane Society. And not just money, your
local shelter can use food and blanket donations, as well as some of
    your time.

I am doubtful that those *old* elephants somehow could help prevent
    elephant extinction.

The reason I support this charity is because I think it does good work. I
love elephants -- I love them. It breaks my heart to see them, these noble,
intelligent creatures, abused in circuses and zoos. It hurts me. So, I
support this charity which provides them with a beuatiful home. I don't
think we have any right to imprison these animals and to force them to
perform -- it's just dreadful. If you do any research on elephants you will
learn that they are very intelligent creatures who form life-long bonds with
    their herds.
I just hate the cruel things we humans do and want to support people who try

You have every right to direct your money as your heart wants. No
    doubt about that.

I also contribute to charity, the NRA foundation.

I considered joining the NRA, but decided to save my money. I do not
consider it a charity and decided my money could be better used elsewhere.
Since I left Arizona, I haven't had a gun anyway. Methinks this isn't the

Now I know why this touched off a twinge of recognition when you
mentioned it! I saw a program during one of Howard's hospital cycles
about an elephant sanctuary. In it a new female arrival causes one of
the other resident females to get all excited. The staff were
surprised, since they acted as if they knew each other, trumpeting
across the stalls. They did some research and found that Jenny and
    Delhi *had* been together before.
Some of the animals there have some horrific stories. :-(

    Take care,

    i

So how many starving children could we save with the money you give to NRA
    lobbyists?

You criticize someone for wanting to save animals, and your money is going
    to protect inanimate objects?

Do you appreciate how very, very deeply your head is planted up your ass
    right now?

    Probably not.

Hey, maybe you can send some guns to those starving children. Hell, it
would be better than letting it get wasted on another circle-jerk mailing
from the NRA, urging us to allow 16 round clips or teflon coated bullets or
    some other moronic [censored].

Hey Malthus, have you figured out that starving populations end up being
breeding grounds for new diseases. How do you think HIV got a foothold -
the health of humans in Africa has a direct bearing on the health of humans
    everywhere.

Bonus points: you want to breed a generation of terrorists? Just turn your
back on suffering and treat millions of people as if their lives aren't
worth [censored]. The survivors will grow up to treat us like our lives aren't
    worth [censored].

We're all stuck on the same planet, sharing the same diseases and grudges
and hopes for the future. We can [censored] on each other, and then complain
about the smell, or we can start making the entire human species healthier,
    smarter, happier, and richer.

Maybe you like the idea of more diseases breeding in populations of
weakened, starving people. Probably doesn't bother youthe least bit, until
someone you know actually dies from one. By then, it's billions of dollars
and millions of deaths to solve a problem you could have avoided with a
    little peace and charity.

So the NRA Foundation is buying guns for the Sudanese? Sorry, couldn't

Maybe having an AK-47 in the cupboard would be useful to folks in Sudan, but
I tend to think it would just result in more slaughter. A U.N. peacekeeping
force is the answer there, and armed with more than light infantry weapons.
Roll up on 'em with mobile artillery, tanks, APCs, and some air support.

Actually, Lab Rat has a point. Although feeding starving people is a
short term solution, it's not a long term solution and is actually more
damaging than just letting them starve.
Third world countries with a large percentage of the population
malnutritioned tend to have a food based economy. When you start offering
food free in these places indefinetly, you kill the economy. You've pretty
much made certain that even if things do get better there, the majority of
the population won't be able to get work and will be depended on handouts to
meet the minimum requirements to continue living because the nations
predominant industry can't compete with free. The situation is made even
worse since these nations usually suffer from having more citizens than the
land can support, and by helping these people in a way that just looks to a
quick fix and not a permenant solution the population problem is made worse.
Long term solutions involve making the land able to support the nations
population (which involves not only agricultural reform but also social
reform on the micro level), and later providing the nation with the
technological and economic means to industrilize the nation. Very few (if
any) charities have the resources to successfully pursue these goals in any
given nation, goals which may take decades to ever be reached under the best
conditions. These types of programs usually have to be initiated by the
nation's government, and then the help of other nations is usually
    necessary.

I have a much simpler long-term solution: end U.S. and European farm
subsidies. These subsidies make it impossible for third world farmers to
compete, and that's why many places don't grow as much food as they should.
U.S. subsidies to just cotton farmers alone total more dollars per year than
all the aid the U.S. gives to the entire continent of Africa.

You'd save some serious money (easily $20 billion in the U.S. alone), and
you would be letting the free market empower people to feed themselves.
