Hi there, Just had a quote for 35 quid to change a battery in a Casio MDA
Illuminator watch.
Any mail order address for companies that will change them over for a
reasonable price?

How about any jeweller in town?
What they won't do is /guarantee/ you still have a waterproof watch, but
that's because there's no way for them to verify the seal is still
perfect rather than a guarantee it is /not/ waterproof any more.

My local jeweller did mine for £6. Its been done twice by them and I've had
no problems. All I do though is shower and swim with it. I don't dive or
anything that may need it to be done better.

The last time that I changed the battery in my polar the jeweller had some
sort of gizmo that tested exactly that. I presume that it worked on some
sort of partial vacuum??

Few years ago I took mine to a local jeweller, who admittedly had to send it
away for two weeks, cost £27 for a new battery, strap and a new seal.
I think it is the seal that is the problem.According to the
instructions, this should be replaced at each battery change ( for obvious
reasons ).Jewellers are willing to swap the battery there and then but don't
keep the seal in stock, hence have to send it away.

Hi Guys, I went into the small shop across from the RBS in downtown Dundee.
He said that my watch would have to be sent away and it would cost about 35
quid.
I asked him to change the battery and I would not use it in damp conditions,
he said that even the steam inside a bathroom might damage the digital
display part of the watch.
I did not bother going into any other shops assuming they would all be
saying the same thing, figuring that I would get a mail order firm that
might change it for around 15 quid or so.
There is another shop at the top of Union street in Dundee that I could pop
into tomorrow and hear what they have to say.
Regards and thanks
Alan

Try Casios' own repair facilities in UK. Last time I used it about 5 years
ago the cost was less than a tenner IIRC

And a battery place in the Forum centre. Last battery change I had done
on a watch was in the one at the top of Union Street IIRC, where they
told me about the waterproof guarantee and I said just do it anyway.
Since a decent illuminator watch costs from £15-£20 to start with you
might just as well get a new watch rather than a battery. Watch
disappeared when I lost it on holiday rather than it had any trouble
getting wet (including being upside down in rivers and the sea in a kayak).
I note that the flashy Suunto "wristop computers" advertise a
user-changeable battery, should this be a worry to anyone considering
expensive wrist gizmos.

Hi again, Just to say that this model I have had a retail of around $130 so
its worth putting in a battery.
here is a link
Regards Alan in Arbroath
Just spoken to casio and they will change and re seal watch for 18.21.
Not bad really, only slight downside is that as the watch is an older model,
they may not have a battery/seal to carry out the work.
They will not commit themselves to do anything more until the watch is in
their hot little hands, wont even say if they have the bits or not.
Strange but true......

Ah well, if it is scuppered for some reason at least the new generation
have 10 year battery lives... ;-/

Ah! I've had that problem myself as well with them with one of my watches.
On the upside when my model could not be fixed albeit an altidude/baro
model. They offered me an equivalent model at cost price to replace it! A
saving of over 50%, worth considering.
I don't know what functions etc are incooperated in a Casio MDA Illuminator
watch, but surely other models would suffice and will be relatively cheaper
nowadays. Maybe less than £10 :-)

I was curious as to why it shouldn't be possible for you to change the
battery in the watch yourself? So I've just taken mine apart with a kitchen
knife for the tiny screws, put it back together and dunked it in the sink
for a bit. It still works and still seems to be waterproof with the old
seal put back in. Admittedly it only cost 3 quid and wasn't a present from
my grandmother on her death bed or anything.

That's the best option, the watch in question should be OK, the seal is only
for waterproofness so careful disassembly should be alright. Other models
such as barometers types need to be a vacuum inside the housing to function,
that's another kettle of fish altogether.

As with A.N. Other Jewellers, one can't /guarantee/ that the seal will
be fully waterproof. But having said that, it's a bit like if I change
a wheel by the roadside I can't /guarantee/ that the nuts will be done
up to their properly specified torque, but even so I doubt it'll fall off.
It's a question of does one spend more and *know* it will be right, or
spend less and it will *probably* be all right. Effectively an
insurance premium. I wouldn't be inclined to pay it either, but then I
don't have a watch that's that smart. Mileage, as ever, varies.

I've bene very happy with my £5.99 Argos watch. It even survived a trip in
the washing machine :-)

Functions:
- time
- date
- stopwatch
- alarm
- mmmmm! spring freshness! ;-)
What it /doesn't/ have is a context sensitive alarm that warns Roos when
she's left it on the table when she means to pick it up on the way to an
orienteering event...

I got sick of batteries dying, and went back to one that is powered by
waving your arm around .. still quartz, but I admit it does lack some of
the niftier features of battery powered digital watches (memos, alarms,
etc.). Only real aggravation is that it doesn't know how many days in
each month, although I gather the new ones solve that now.

A nice solution, but one that costs Real Money. Given batteries last a
couple of years on older watches like mine, and 10 years in the newer
models, and basic watches are basically disposable fluff, much as I
admire the engineering I can't really see it as worth investing.
