The thing of it is, TC, gweebles lives in the country, not the city. So
do I. In the city, I kept my cat inside most of the time, although he
had a kitty door into the fenced back yard.
But in the country, even tho there are cars, there's a lot fewer
cars....and the cat owner has to weigh the potential hazards versus the
expanded happiness of the cat getting to run, climb trees, catch mice
and moles...and yes, take their chances with cars.
Ive made the same decision gweebles did---to let the cat have a real
cat's life and take my chances with the cars. So far, my cat is fine.
She could get hi today, but she could also live 10 years without getting
hit. On the othe hand, if I keep her closed up inside, she wont get hit
by a car, but her quality of life will be greatly reduced on a daily
basis.
Parents have to face the same realities with their kids. If you send
them to public school, they might get shot, kidnapped, molested by a
teacher, even. Or, you can home school them and not let them out of the
house, ever, unsupervised. This keeps them alive....but depreives them
of the normal socialization of being with other kids as well as teaching
them the world is a hostile, unsafe place. Either choice is a trade-off
and holds potential negative consequences.
Without a crystal ball, either choice may be the wrong one.
The point is, the SOB who hit gweebles cat did so on purpose. Not an
accident. People like that exist in the world, just as the child
molester or kidnapper does.
If country folks have to keep their cats inside because some psycho's
are out there, just like many parents are home schooling their kids
because some psychos are out there....OR choose to stand on the side of
"normalcy" and trust their kids (or cats) wont get mangled by a nutjob
and more damage might be done by restricting their movement than by
trusting in human decency, the outcme will prove them right or wrong.
Gweebles made the choice to trust the world and give the cat freedom.
In this case, the results were bad. Not being psychic, lacking that
crystal ball, hardly makes her to blame for the nutjob's behavior. It
wasnt an accident---it was a purposeful cat killing.
When a child is snatched from the school yard, would you be so hasty to
jump on the "It's YOUR fault" bandwagon? You sent yer kid to
school....so, it's your fault a psycho snatched your kid?
It's the psycho's 'fault".
I know how awful gweebles feels. But I know that being governed by fear
and losing all trust in humanity isnt the answer. If it were, everybody
would be keeping their kids at home, because any one of them MIGHT not
make it home today, from school.
I KNOW my kitty could be killed. Or, she may not ever get hit. But if I
keep her inside the rest of her natural life to prevent what MIGHT
happen, I'll be the one to "blame" for the unhappiness it will cause
her. IF she gets hit, I'll be to blame for that, too.
Somebody knocked on my door yesterday to use the phone...lost, I COULD
have not let him in, refused to let him use my phone, because he COULD
have been a psycho, no doubt about it. He could have killed me, no
denying the possibility.
But if we let our fear of what MIGHT happen, if we never stop to help a
stranger, never take a chance, how much humanity is lost trying to
prevent what MIGHT happen and probably wont?
If my cat could talk and I asked her straight up whether she'd prefer to
live indoors and be safe or take her chances being a REAL kitty in the
country, I think she'd pick taking her chances. I KNOW I would.
It IS dangerous 'out there", yet every day, each of us leaves the house,
gets in a car, deals with strangers, all opportunities to die....but
also to live. Something MIGHT kill us...but probaly wont. Some might
make the choice to stay at home, never go out, even to shop, isolating
altogether from the world to be 'safe". To 'save" their life, they
voluntarily give up their life. Wise choice?
Attacking gweebles for the loss of her cat adds insult to injury. [censored]
happens. Or, it doesnt happen. But there's no way to know, in advance.
But that nutjobs live in the world isnt gweeble's 'fault".
Lighten up on the blame. Hindsight is always 20/20. If she'd KNOWN the
cat killer was out that day, do you think she'd have let the cat out? Is
she "wrong" for not being psychic?
Do you have kids, TC? Are they in school today?
Can you guarantee they will get home alive, unmolested? today and every
day in the future? IF they get hurt....will it be YOUR fault for
letting them out of your home and sight?
