OT: Blueyonder news server.

If one switches newsservers without resetting the account (by just
editing the servername in the current account), the article count will
almost certainly get mixed up. All servers use their own numbering.

Yes, It's being doing odd things since the end of last week (since last
time it was totally broken)

If you mark your subscribed groups as read the next time you collect the
headers you seem to get some old ones too. I got about 20,000 the first
time for URC but now its settled down to about 500.

I wasn't sure at first if it was Blueyonder news or my move to using
Mozilla Thunderbird as a news reader.

Shhh! I wouldn't discuss it here as it will doubtless just start
another thread about how this Interweb thing works and everyone will get

Didn't do that. I simply connected to the server I had already been
using all evening. The previous time I got around 20 new messages.
This time the floodgates opened.

Yes, that's what I did. But surely that's a function in the news
reader client, not the server. I'm using Free Agent ATM.

Sorry, I'll rephrase that.

I marked the groups as read but next time I collected the headers the
newsreader was collecting old messages (which I had read) as well as the
new messages.

Anyway it seems to have stopped now. Blueyonder were having problems
with their news servers last week, but I changed newsreader at about the
same time, so the the problem might have been here.

No - the blueyonder news service has been abysmal of late. (But this
week, seems finally to be working properly, touch wood).

they replaced the entire thing several weeks ago with a more scalable
solution, and the bedding-in problems have been both terrible and
long-lived.
