  1. Was it just me, or did anyone else notice that the BBC website homepage was
a completely different design earlier on today? It has reverted to normal
again now. Odd thing to do: make a big design change and then change it all
    back again.

Was it the low bandwidth version? I think it occasionally serves up a
different page when it's under a lot of load.

    (wild guesses here btw!)

No -- it was much more graphically rich than the current one.

They seem to have an alternate design which gives more prominence to the lead
story, I've noticed it a couple of times when there's a big story. In the
alternate version the main story gets the whole width of the page to the
right of the l.h. menu, taking the space which is normally given to the links
to "other top stories" -- was that it?

Sounds a bit like that, but it wasn't a story, it was a plug for a wildlife
programme -- hardly breaking news. Othere elements of the design were
changed too, like thicker borders round the text blocks. It was definitely a
    new design.

Yep, wildlife was the main feature. I saw it too and quite liked it

thoough I visited other sites and returned to make sure that I was not
imagining things. The uderlying news page was the 'normal' design.

Dunno, I usually read the BBC website on my BlackBerry, which gets the
    Really Tiny Version :-)

If you look right now they're showing Moslosovic's Death
in a full screen version on the standard website

If you look at the bottom of the page you will find a link that explains
what is happening. Basically they are doing a series of one off pages
associated with the Planet Earth series.
