I'm thinking about buy a set of clubs and taking up golf. I'm tall enough (and left-handed) that borrowing a set of clubs to get started is impossible. I'd appreciate it if one of you duffers can contact me by email and give me some free advice about buying a first set of clubs -- like how do I know if I need the lie adjusted if I'm ordering irons off the Internet. Don't worry about being too tall (yet). Get to a driving range and see if you really want to get into this. If you do, go for an inexpensive set (so you are not hurt too much if you quit or decide to move to better clubs). WARNING it is addictive!

Agreed... you definitely do not want custom clubs prior to becoming a *proficent* golfer... go to a pro shop to get fitted and buy a moderately priced off the rack package... but *custom* clubs are BIG buck$, fergeddaboudit until you've played regularly for at least three years. And by "regularly" we're talking at least 72 holes a week. One or two rounds a week is recreational golf, those types wouldn't know up from down about custom clubs. Go to Sports Authority or [censored]. Spend your money on good shoes and a good cart, for the rest mediocre will do just fine. No one will be impressed by your equipment if you can't hit the ball.

I did try r.s.g. about a week ago, but they are busy dealing with stuff like Lesbians on the LPGA tour, Scientology, Star Wars and Racism, and whether Jesus uses hybrid clubs. When I did post a golf question over there, I got blasted with GOLF IS TOO IMPORTANT TO TRUST TO A BUNCH OF STRANGERS ON THE INTERNET. So I thought I'd try to initiate a discussion with some of the folks here who've seen me in this newsgroup for years. But I don't wanna clutter up the group *too* much with off-topic stuff where there is another group available, so I requested email replies. (That's one of the good things about using ones real email address even though it does invite a certain amount of spam.)
BTW, I'm 6'7", lefthanded, and resemble the "Mr Incredible" character from the recent cartoon feature (but with a smaller chin, and I don't think I'm that fat -- and I don't wear tights.) Too tall is a big issue for getting started. It's not a big deal later when (if) I'm ready for custom-fitted name-brand clubs, but I want to get started for $200 or less. One of the, measurements for clubs is the distance from the tip of the fingers, with your arms hanging down, to the ground. So if you have long arms you might still use standard length clubs even at 6'7". If you have a Golfsmith near you they will let you hit a few different clubs.
