OT: Answers to Q´s never asked?

I usually learn a lot with these off-topics (off-topic in the sense that
they are no more related to the original question, not that are not
inherent to this ng)

Dear Ivar,

Your newsreader (the program) may be mis-configured so that
you are not getting, are deleting, or cannot find the posts
from your news server (ISP).

Your post's header suggests that your newsreader is
Microsoft Outlook and that your news server is
number1.nntp.dca.giganews.com as your news server.

You might try to look at rec.bicycles.tech with two other
news servers. If you see how other programs and sites work,
you may be able to figure out your problem.

If you click on these links, your browser will show lists of
the most recent posts.

Google Groups is slower about adding new posts, but is
easier to use than Cycling Forums.

Anyone on the internet can browse these news servers, but
you must fill out a membership form to post replies.

Yes. You'll also have to change the bottom bracket, although your double fd
should be able to handle the extra 3 tooth difference of the compact crank.
Probably have to shorten the chain a link or too as well.

Dear Francesco,

I may be wrong, but I think that Ivar is just asking why he
sometimes has trouble finding the original post that started
a thread (an internet problem with his newsreader or news
server), not asking why people like me wander so wildly
off-topic.

That is, he may be seeing replies that do not seem to
connect to any original post.

Some news servers will disconnect replies from the original
thread when the subject line is changed.

I'm not sure if this is all that's puzzling Ivar--whatever
he's seeing may be much worse than just the occasional
change-of-subject detachment seen in Google Groups

Yes, I'm sorry, I misunderstood.

I also noticed that sometimes the replies are detached from the original
post.
For example, for this thread I can now see 3 different, detached
subthreads. One is the one where I say I'm sorry. The other one is yours
(this) and the third contains the funny answer by trg.
Something is going wrong, maybe it's a bug in my reader (thunderbird
0.7) but maybe it can create the problem that Ivar describes.

Along with the news reader program, two other sources of missing
posts-

- The original post has been deleted from the news server because of
age. As new posts keep piling in, servers may have to delete the
oldest posts to open up storage room for the newest posts. The links
you gave help with this problem.

- Propogation problems. As a post is sent out from one server (like
the original poster's news server) to others, there can be problems in
spreading a post around usenet so that it is seen by the server an
individual is accessing. Sometimes this is just one of those 'slipped
through the cracks' things. Using other servers, or storage services
like google or cycling forum will get you around this.

And sometimes there is more going on. For example, my ISP host,
pacbell.net, had a bad reputation as a spam source for a time a few
years ago. Some usenet administrators would 'drop' posts from pacbell
(not allow them on their server and not propogate them to other
servers). Some administrators would *not* drop pacbell posts.
Depending on how someone's news sever stood in the whole usenet
system, some people would see my posts and some people wouldn't. If
my post went from A to B to C to D before you would see it, but C was
dropping pacbell posts and D used only C as its source, you'd never
see my post. But someone at, say, B would see it, and they could
respond and that is all that you would see.

Outlook Express is *not* Outlook.

The solution to the server expiry problem, which is common to all news

Depending on the number of headers you have your reader set to download, the
frequency of posting on the particular newsgroup and the frequency with
which you visit the newsgroup I think you may get more or less of these
questionless answers. In Outlook Express, I think the default header
download is 300; I have mine set at 1000 (Tools|Option|Read tab). Even so,
if I don't visit a busy newsgroup for awhile, I'll get a number of
questionless answers. You could check your header download number and
perhaps increase it. That also means a longer time to download the headers
which is not a problem if you have broadband as opposed to dial-up.

The download number in OE is a silly design. It only applies when you click
on the news group itself and its synchronization setting is anything other
than Don't Synchronize. If the number of available headers/messages exceeds
the download number then you will only get the download number of new
headers/messages and never the rest. What you need to do to download all
available headers/messages is click on the news server account (ie,
news.foo.com), select a synchronization setting anything other than Don't
Synchronize, and then click the Synchronize Account button in the other
pane. On really busy groups that could mean many thousands of posts, so I
have message rules which delete any post older than 30 days and which will
Mark As Read any post more than 1 day old, thus limiting the number of new
posts I have to deal with. If you don't care about downloading any
available posts and you're willing to start from scratch then right-click on
the news group and select Catch Up. OE will then synch its message count
with that of the server for that group.
