  1. Davey saw a report somewhere that AJ is not carried by any US
    cable/satellite service provider

This was referring specifically to the recently introduced English
language broadcasts, not to the Arabic News and Kids channels

Anybody know if this is in fact so?

    I think it's true.

In the long run, the corporate censorship won't matter. The 'net and TV
will eventually be the same thing.

    Thanks, I was just interested

Interestingly enough, it really isn't very hard line

But a few minutes ago they polled a few reporters for Man of The Year.
Jimmy Carter and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad were favoured

And amost unanimously Donald Rumstead was nominated for villain

Given the fact that the senior Bush?s most significant contribution to

I believe only a few small town cable systems carry Aljazeera English.
The main satellite and cable TV providers refuse to do so - jewish
    controlled.

However, it is available over the continent on two satellites,
free-to-air - one on C-band (the big ugly dish) and one on Ku band. I
specifically installed a system just to get AJE. It is far superior to
the typical N. American trash that is readily available and better than
    BBC World.

If it was readily available to Americans and Canadians it would become
the news channel of choice to a large number of the viewers. It is also
available at 50 kb download speed at
    http://europarse.real.com/hurl/gratishurl.ram?pid=eu_aljazeera&file=al_jazeera_en_lo.rm

Notice, that seems to be a European site.

Well perhaps, but the money angle is possibly a more cogent
reason. Given that it does seem to be a reasonably balanced
broadcaster, AlJ would become quite popular and draw signifiant
amounts of advertizing revenues away from the established Talking
    Heads news broadcast channels

That's good to know and possibly of interest to some RBR denizens

Actually Davey gets Television as a no charge extra to his ISP service, and
free telephone service too to many countries, with cell subscribers
available too in Canada and USA, just having changed from Wanadoo to
    Free here in France

All in all though television is a novel medium since Davey refused to
have a television for the last 30 years or so. But of the English news
that is available to him, AlJ is certainly his fave so far and there
are many available, even a Chinese channel, in addition to SKY, CNN,
    BBC-World etc

I don't think it's on broadcast television but is available online.

Ditto that. Plus there is an inherent political conservatism in US

The lack of availability is much more a function of it not being "patriotically
correct" at the moment. When advertisers feel it won't kill their business via
potential boycotts, then they will start buying time. At the moment, Al Jazeera has
been painted by the Bush admin. and it's enablers in the oh-so-compliant media as
the most evil network on the planet.

If you watch Al Jazeera, then the terrorists will have won!

After telling the UN assembly in 2003 that Saddam Hussein had weapons
of mass destruction, the former Secretary of State admitted in May
2004 the claims were "inaccurate and wrong and, in some cases,
    deliberately misleading".

Wars of aggression are the most barbarous of all human endeavors and
are, more often than not, the instruments of insane tyrants who hear
voices. Wars are also waged by warlike gambling leaders who bet their
citizens' houses to fulfill their megalomaniac dreams of grandeur.

    Hey JT
I've decided that I really like a combination of sources starting with
AFP, the CBC, and CNews.com. Between the three of them they seem to hit
a lot of wotld news that other sites and sources bury, and you seem to
get a closer to complete picture from the combination.
The BBC is usually the first thing I read, but it's terrible IMO, both
CNN and Fox are less slanted and more professional these days and the
BBC is better than the rest of the Brit stuff IMO.
Arabnews.com is OK, AlJ is generally OK.
Gotta be careful there because http://www.aljazeera.com/ is a heavily
censored terroist loving site, basically it IS what everyone say
"AlJazeera" is. The message boards here are brutally censored, but it's
fun to try and get around them. Real dialogue is totally impossible
    though.

The actual AlJ is here http://english.aljazeera.net/News and like I
    said pretty decent.
The Times syndicates stuff is wildly uneven IMO but worth reading
because liike the BBC it's considered as a leading source. The rest of
the NY papers aren't worth the trees they cut down to make the paper as
    far as I can tell.

Reading both CNN and Fox helps for US stuff, but I don't have much
faith in either one due to editorial biasing. Together you can sort of
get a picture but it's easier and more accurate to get it from the
    Canadians it seems.
Then there're all the "specialty" sites but that's a lot more slanted
reading time which does get you stories the others don't carry.
    I particulary like http://www.jta.org/ for a Jewish/Israeli slant on
things. It offsets Arabnews, the Guardian, and AlJ pretty well.

    Dumbass -

Studies have shown that, in this culture, socioeconomic status and
perceived "happiness" are not correlated. Of course it does not
necessarily apply to every individual case, but as a group, rich people
are no more happy than poor people.

Another group of studies by Mihaly Csikszentmihaly show that the people
who are the happiest are the ones who engage in activities and
professions that they enjoy. It's the doing that makes one happy, not
    the buying.

It is possible to become wealthy *and* pursue a profession that one
enjoys. I personally believe that it's more likely that one has a
better chance of getting wealthy if one does that because if you enjoy
your profession, you'll probably be good at it and therefore you'll
rise to the top of your profession and make more $$$. The problem in
this culture is the message is propogated that *buying* makes one
happy, not doing. Too many people chase dollars in the belief that
working one's ass off in a job they don't enjoy will make them happy
when they can have that BMW in the driveway because of said job.
Unfortunately, simply buying stuff doesn't do it.

    Your mileage may vary.

    thanks,

    K. Gringioni.

This year it is liberals who are protesting - over Wal-Mart's
decision to stock on its shelves the Evangelical video game "Left
Behind: Eternal Forces." Based on the best-selling "Left Behind"
books, the game's plotline begins after the Rapture, in that den of
sin known as New York City. The player is a member of the newly
faithful who must convert or kill evil nonbelievers who are led by the
leader of a United Nations-like organization, who, by the way, also
    happens to be the anti-Christ.

This is what I do not understand. They get the rapture
and bragging rights; but that is not enough. They get
to be the imps of hell tormenting the damned in NYC,
just because that damned are trying to get along. It is
not as if the DINYC are particularly interested in
ragging on the chosen. Live and let live. Would you
like to buy a watch? Real cheap.
