Thirteen months after we got married, and almost six YEARS after we were engaged, I got my greencard today! Now I can come and go as I please and they'll have to let me back into the country! Of course the first words out of my mother's mouth when I told her were 'when are you coming home to visit'? Not for awhile, because I really don't want to leave my husband for a month when we've only been married for a year, though I might change my mind come midsummer when the temperature hits 95 and the humidity matches it... Now I can start my countdown to citizenship... in two years I remove conditions and get a ten-year greencard instead of my temporary one, and three years after THAT I can apply for US citizenship, and then I'll get to know that I can live here forever without ever having to deal with the Immigration people ever again!
Ob food:John got home early today and he was tired so we had a nap together, and then it was too late to bake the tilapia fillets that I'd been planning to thaw and crumb. I'll do them tomorrow night instead. Tonight we had a bowl of salad, and frozen pepperoni pizza because it was quick and easy to do, once I prised the individual pizzas apart and put them on a tray.

Thank you 🙂 I've been in the US since November 2004, but it takes a long time for them to process immigration paperwork so I was in limbo all year...
Tonight we had a bowl of salad, and frozen pepperoni pizza because it was quick and easy to do, once I prised the individual pizzas apart and put them on a tray.

A good friend of mine is married to a guy from Egypt and they are finally getting his citizenship stuff put through. They had hoped to go back to Egypt over Christmas break but it just didn't get done on time. I know much about the dread waiting.

Dear Karen, It had been my understanding that once you marry a U.S. citizen, you become a citizen yourself. Maybe they changed the rules. Anyway, congratulations to you. Here's a toast to you becoming a citizen.

It's not my first choice of dinner! But John loves it, and it's CHEAP, so it's good for a treat or a busy/lazy night at home...

I hope they get their good news soon too... I post to an immigration bulletinboard called visa journey and it's FULL of people coming to the US on marriage visas, so I know all the things that can go wrong (and thankfully in my case, didn't...)

Sadly, that hasn't been the case since the 1970s! Once you marry a US citizen you can APPLY for citizenship, but you have to do a heck of a lot of expensive paperwork first, and wait for a long time... it's rather ridiculous actually - since I met my husband online and I wasn't in the country, we had to do one lot of expensive paperwork for me to be allowed into the country to marry him, and once we were married we had to another lot of expensive paperwork for me to be allowed to stay! And in five years time we get to do the LAST lot of expensive paperwork to get me citizenship...

Congratulations. With all the flap over(illegal)immigration going on, that's probably good timing. I suspect the process will get harder in the near future.

I know I was *thrilled* to finally get my permanent residence card in DK (and luckily for me, I slipped in under the wire and it only took me three years instead of the current seven [the current DK gov't isn't exactly immigrant-friendly]). Good luck in your pursuit of citizenship. I won't be pursuing DK citizenship because I'd have to give up my US citizenship (strange that the US will allow dual citizenship, at least as far as US citizens going somewhere else and wanting additional citizenship -- don't know about people coming to the US -- but Denmark doesn't) and I'm not ready to do that (yet -- if the political situation becomes untenable, I may change my mind). Anyway, good for you! -j
