In UK (where we have terms)

not sure how many weeks but there are 2 Semesters in a college school year,
probably similar to your Terms. I've heard of schools having 4 semesters
(sometimes called "marking periods"😉 but that's always been for elementary
schools or middle school.

Actually, just how long they are depends on the college or in the case of
lower schools it depends on the state law. Each state sets a number of days
that students must be in classrooms each year. This is divided into two
semesters. Obviously the total length of a semester will also depend on how
many vacation days are included. Most schools provide at least a week off
at Christmas time and another week in the spring. There are also a number
of individual days off for students while teachers hold conferences with
parents and attend teacher training.

For colleges I believe there is more leeway though I'm sure there are
minimums set for accreditation. Some colleges have a trimester system, with
three equal periods during the year with about two weeks off between each
two. Colleges with a semester system have a shorter summer school schedule
but they may have double class hours/week in order to give equal credit.

IIRC, a semester is 12 weeks and a quarter is 8 weeks (with the remaining
quarter being called "summer term"😉.
There are 2 semesters in the school year.

In UK (where we have terms)

In the US (college or university), a semester is generally 25% of a year.

School "starts" in the fall, around August and ends in December, which
is the final turn for the year. You would register in August for a
certain number of classes, and your finals for those classes would be
in December.

In January, you would register for the "Spring" semester (or term.)
Your January classes would end in May, when you would take the finals
for those classes.

Then, there's usually a summer term, which might be considered
optional. In Summer, the number of courses you would take would be
limited, because they are very intense--usually meeting monday thru
friday for several hours at each meeting--essentially to squeeze in the
same numeric quantity of classroom time into a month.

The summer semester would last through June and July; it would also
have a first summer session and a second summer session, each batch of
classes taking about a month with finals at the end of June for summer
session 1 and finals at the end of july or beginning of August for
summer session 2. There might be alternative classes which are paced
to last throughout the entire summer.

Approximately 15 weeks.

Semester usually refers to a half-year length period, whatever that may
be. A trimester would be a one-third school year length period.

In the US (college or university), a semester is generally 25% of a year.

In the US colleges tend to go on 4 quarters (52/4=13 weeks)
that go the entire year, or 3 terms that are 3 quarters on 1 off
(so terms are also 13 weeks) or 2 semisters for the same
year length as the colleges on terms.

Quarter - 12 weeks with 1 off.
Term - 12 weeks with 1 off.
Semester -

3*13=36. 36/2=18. Take 1-2 off and a semister is 16-17 weeks.

Semester == about half academic year, which excludes summer.
Trimester == about 1/3 academic year.

academic year == ~ 9 mo or so...
