You, sorry for an off-topic post? You're joking right! ;-)

I think you might be referring to the recent thread by
Richard Gosney called 'The Perfect Camera Carry System,'
where later in the thread, he told me that he had just moved
ISP's and got 250mb free webspace: tinyurl.com2c9qzOpen ↗

I think the ISP was www.plus.net, but I'm not sure if this
is what you were after, because this was for an ISP change,
not just for webspace (I think).

Plus.net, damn good support and you also a get PHP/Mysql
(one database thrown in). Disadvantage to the CGI/PHP/MySQL
is that it's on a separate server to you main account. Not a
major problem and can be worked around.

DSL + the above features for £21 PCM

Plusnet plus.netplus.netOpen ↗ include 250MB of webspace with
their ADSL Home account. This costs £21.99 a month and also
includes mySQL, php etc if that is of interest.

suit my requirements temporarily until I choose a paid-for
webhost. Need to move my domain.

I think the ISP was www.plus.net, but I'm not sure if this
is what you were after, because this was for an ISP change,
not just for webspace (I think).

Correct on all counts. I didn't join simply for the
"free" webspace, but it was a contributory factor.
However, as someone else mentioned, Plusnet isn't the
cheapest ISP around and certainly not the cheapest way to
get 250Mb of webspace.

They monitor the groups and lend a hand (advertise?). This

You have to ask the new provider what their tag is and ask
the old provider to transfer the domain to the new provider
giving them the new tag.

Some companies charge you to leave their service - often the
ones that charge little for the registration do this.

The domain will be transferred to the new hosting provider
and will be an empty site (perhaps with an automatically
generated holding page).

You will have to manually reconstruct the site on the new
host.

There should be no need to delete it from the old server as
they will wipe it when they remove the account.

Once you get the ball rolling the process can be very quick
or can take a couple of days. You will most probably have to
keep checking if the new host is up and then upload the site
once it is.

You'll need somewhere to host the domain which offers
the web space. That could either be an ISP or a
dedicated hosting provider. Personally I use Gradwell
(gradwell.comgradwell.comOpen ↗) to host a number of mailboxes and
three domains, but you can just purchase one domain with
web hosting and mail forwarding if you like for around
40 pounds/year. That would get you 250Mb webspace to
start with.

Once you had set up on Gradwell (or whoever) you simply add
the domain and request a transfer, and they will pull it in
from the existing hosting company and automagically sort
everything out. Takes about 2-4 days to transfer and to
settle down. The old host meanwhile should, if they're any
good, be catching mail and web requests which still come to
them so there should be no gaps. This is for any address
which falls under Nominet, such as .co.uk or .org.uk.

Your old web server will have certain capabilities and the
new provider's server will have certain capabilities, likely
to not be identical. For a standard load of html/css and
images this is no problem, for scripting and databases you
should confirm with the new provider that they provide the
necessary capabilities to ensure your site functions.

Having used the Net for years I would defintely say that
the most productive way to use it is to use your ISP for
connectivity and basic services and use a dedicated
provider for your other services. This gives you the
freedom to change ISPs when you like without disrupting
your email, websites or anything else. I've used Gradwell
for mail hosting, web hosting, domain hosting, messaging,
mobile comms, DNS management, spam filtering, newsgroups
and a million other things. Just a satisfied customer of
many years.

Don't forget Fotopic too, they provide 250Mb of free space
for your photos, that's a lot of walking pics 🙂
