  1. I am about to move house and near when I am moving to has a nice
looking single track tarmac road through some farm land. It has a sign
saying private road and I looked on the OS map on the net and it shows
as an alternating green and white line, but I can't find what that
means. Any ideas about access rights, or do I just leave it alone?

A green and white dotted line indicates a public right of way. If the green is
a short dashed line then a public footpath is indicated, and if longer than a
    bridal way.

Either way, "private road" normally means that that the route has been upgraded
by the land owner to improve vehicular access to premises, but there is no
general right to drive along it.

It will probably be a bridleway or public footpath depending upon the
weight of the line / length of the dashes. If a bridleway you have a
right to travel by horse, cycle or foot along it. If footpath you only
    have pedestrian access rights.

The Private Road sign most probably refers to vehicular traffic but if
you have a stroll along the road and experience difficulties with the
land owner check the status with the local highway authority as rights
    of way are their responsibility.

I spent ages looking on the OS site and didn't find that! Thanks all
for your advice, it looks like it is a footpath so I look forward to
having an exploration down it :-)

A public right of way. This means for you that you have to keep the way
open and usable along that line.

It might be a public footpath (short dashes) or a public bridleway
(longer dashes). The first is allowed to walkers only, the other to any
    non-motorized traffic.

In both cases, there is no public right to follow the road by car.

It all depends on the weight of the lines.

yes, and the scale as you pointed out.

Maybe I should have asked the scale or even the GR square to see
    before commenting ;-)

  11. A sign saying 'private road', errecte by a member of the public, does not
have any meaning in law, a private road could be an unnadopted road, I used
to live on one, my deeds stated I had to allow free access for all users.

Many landowner put up 'private road' signs when they know the road has
vehicular rights, how do you check? I wish I knew the definitive answer ro
    that!

  13. BTW I forgot to mention, if you need to use this road for access beware of
the CROW act, if the road is 'private' then the landowner will then be able
to stop you using it, unless you can come to some, 'financial' arangement,
unless YOU can prove you have the legal right to use it.
