  1. Ive been getting more intensley into running until I developed shin splints
    and it took me out.
Ive since gotten orthotics from a podiatrist by getting casts of my feet
    made.

Ive just recently got them and tonight was my first run in them. Im aware it
takes a while to get used to them, ive been wearing them for about a week
now and ran tonight. I got my slowest time for a run ever and the soles of
my feet were so sore. It was very disheartening and has me down n out.

Is this just the adjustment phase? Or will there always be a level of
discomfort as the inserts raise my foot to the correct position which is
unnatural for me. It feels like im stepping on an egg, but the podiatrist
says thats what I need to correctly get my feet in a neutral position.

Im curious to hear of other peoples experiences and how they slowly
    developed themselves.
Im concerned that this will hamper my performance indefinitley.
    Many thanks

Trash the stupid things now, before you become forever dependant on
them. Orthos are a LAST RESORT! Only after you've tried a dozen or
more shoes first. Shoes these days are amazing things, the problem is
getting the right ones for your running style. Have you tried Asics
2000 series? They've saved manty a runner from orthos.

"As democracy is perfected, the office of president represents, more and
more closely, the inner soul of the people. On some great and glorious day
the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last and the
White House will be adorned by a downright moron."
    H.L. Mencken (1880 - 1956)
"Anyone with degrees from Yale and Harvard is presumed to be intelligent,
but George W. Bush has managed to overcome that presumption."

  3. Did you follow directions for getting acclimated to them? (A couple hours
the first day, a couple more than that the second day, and so on...)

I remember having that feeling like there was an egg or a ball in my shoe
for about a week -- and that was just wearing the orthotics around the
house, to the store, etc. In my case, the 'egg' feeling was really strong
because the orthotics were attempting to correct for high arches. I
didn't actually try to run with them until the second week I had them
(also one of the doc's directions). By then, the discomfort was pretty
much gone. By the third week, I couldn't even tell the orthotics were
there -- unless I forgot to put them into the shoes I was running in.

  4. Oh, yeah. Ignore this troll. He hates anything and everything that he
doesn't do or use. Just as orthotics may not be a cure-all for every
runner's problem every time, only a moron would issue a complete blanket
    denouncement.

Agreed. I never leave home without them.

Are they the rigid plastic kind? I have custom orthotics of firm foam
made from a cast and they felt right from the beginning. But my husband
can't get anything to work for him. Go back to the doctor and tell him
you think the orthotics may need adjustment.

Probably because he doesn't need a "crutch".
