I was convinced I wanted to buy a Rivendell. Totally convinced. I had visions of lugged steel---until I visited my LBS for my fit kit session. They are a Waterford/Gunnar/Trek dealer, and the shop owner and I had a long BS session about how I was going to use the bike. I'm going to use it as a commuter, light touring, and century machine, but I live in Florida so I need fenders. I told him I wanted to be comfortable above all else--hand numbness is my bugaboo. The yellowjersey page shows the new design, which is semi-compact. Should get my bars up to a more comfortable level. I sprung for the Waterford paint job in British Racing Green. Honey Brooks B17, natural cork tape, barcons, fat tires, fenders, rack, Sugino XD crankset, the full semi-BOBish package. Should take 2.5 months or so to get it done. That's going to be the longest two and a half months of my life. LOL.

Nice choices. I love the clean look of TIG welded frames. Lugs can look so garish to me.
I hate living in the same town as Yellow Jersey. How am I supposed to control myself when they've got Waterfords, Gunnars, Habeneros, etc.

Looks like a nice bike.
Does it seem odd to anybody else, though, that the norm has become your order yourself a nice bicycle, but buy your car off the lot? It wasn't all that long ago that you ordered your car, with the options you wanted, and bought the bike out of the showroom.

I guess that's how it goes with small boutique bike makers. My LBS is a Waterford/Gunnar/Litespeed/Co-Motion/Trek/Giant dealer, and the only ones on the floor in any great numbers were Treks and Giants. I don't mind waiting, if it means I get exactly the bike I want. :-)

You can still order a car how you want it, but it costs you more. Additionally, many of the cars on the lot have the popular options, and people like instant gratification.
And most people do by their bike out of the showroom.
