Orbea Orca frame: bad test <-> Euskatel team frame

Not far from you, in France, the same frame was voted as bike of the year,
by Le Cycle. The final was between this one and the Kuota Krédo and the
LOOK 486. A jury of 10 (?), including readers and journalists, tested all
the bikes over several tries, and that was the result. I have not ridden
this one, but the Kuota, and adore it. I can't imagine why your magazine
was so negative. Perhaps if you read the French one, you could get an idea
of the criteria for their decision and compare the articles.

Pro Cycling or Cycle Sport recently had a review of the Orbea Orca
frame. Chris Boardman was the reviewer. The opinion was it was an
OK, average, not all that exciting bike. Nothing bad mentioned in the
review. Just the impression it was not a fantastic, heart pounding,
adrenaline pumping bike, compared to some of the other super high end
bikes reviewed and ridden by Boardman.

I haven't but there are three guys in the club that bought them and like
them. Of course a frame that light would feel good no matter if it was a
real junker. I think that everyone that I've talked to about these
ultralights tells me that they prefer the Giant to the Orbea.

Maybe the Frenh put a lightweight test rider on the bike and the Germans Jan
Ullrich ?

Bollocks. I've done 80 km/h descents on an Orca; it was stable enough to
allow me to overtake another rider in a curve.

As far as I can tell, Tour is fixated on stiffness. So they do stiffness
tests, then goes out and finds riding behaviour that corresponds with what
their flexometer tells them.

I believe Boardman said he liked the Guru carbon bike he tested the
month before better than the Orca. I am sure someone on this forum
subscribes to Pro Cycling and could type in the summary paragraph from
this review.

I agree that they're overconcerned, but you must admit that a heavy rider or
unexperienced rider shouldn't buy a bike that isn't stiff if (s?)he wants
to use it in mountainous areas.

Furthermore, they had a whole team riding those bikes with the same
wheelsets. They said they clearly felt less secure descending on the Orca.
They trashed Merckx carbon bike also btw...........

thought it was old fashioned construction (lugs) and the geometry was

criticisms.

Wust seems to like everything including the Orbea Lobular he reviewed
last year, but he really gave good marks to the Saeco Cannondale six13
in April.
