Opinions on Gios frame

The making them for years. It's their 'speciality'. I don't see the
point of over complicating things, but hey if you can stand the ugly
look of it, it's OK. I always found GIOS frames way overpriced, but some
people think it's worth the price only for the color. YMMV.

Hi Peter,

A good friend and a very experienced cyclist had one of those frames
in the late '80s/early '90s. He found the handling somewhat 'twitchy',
especially on fast descents. Do you have an opportunity to ride it
before you buy it?

The overall construction quality seems quite good.

My Super Record model has a very short top tube. I think that's the same
with a Compact.

Hi Peter,

A good friend and a very experienced cyclist had one of those frames
in the late '80s/early '90s. He found the handling somewhat 'twitchy',
especially on fast descents. Do you have an opportunity to ride it
before you buy it?

The overall construction quality seems quite good.

I went to their site. The geometry charts are incomplete. No head
tube angle, no fork offset. 74 deg seat tube angle.

IIRC, a very short TT, very short chainstays (hence the necessity for
the "adjustable" dropouts), a very steep head angle, low trail.

That is the Gios Compact with gold plated end screws. If it is new NOS
that's cheap. Used, it could be high or low - no way to know.

Overall a well-made sharp handling Crit frame.

Certainly good, if in proper order.
As a guide line, keep in mind that a similar custom made Columbus
AELLE frameset, unpainted yet, would cost you just over 200 euros.
Plus, it is not at all easy to find a source for it.

Mostly. Yep, they are short. The higher head angle is paired to a short
rake fork for neutral handling with normal 50mm trail.

Good news. Seller of the frame contacted me this AM and it is a 27.2
mm seat post.

Bad news? Maybe not. Apparently the bike was in a bit of an accident.
Seller says there is a slight dimple in the downtube just behind the
headtube visible in pic 10 of 11. I do not see any thing unusual. The
image is here:

(Non-expert opinion): Now you know why it's "cheap", but not nearly
cheap enough for a do-it-yourself wind chimes kit <g>.

As in all things ebay, "There Will Be Another"! Only without the
folded top tube, and it will be more expensive.

I lusted after one of the old 80's (in my case) blue-with-medallions
Gios, and later got a used white Compact that wasn't crashed for
cheap, to race (mostly crits) on.

Those old blue ones I saw mostly had really nice paint; my white
Compact was not so fortunate. Thin and chippy.

Yup, real short top tube, and the little rubber brake cable inserts
for the top tube were a pain. The bike worked fine. The adjustable
dropouts adjusted and stayed put.

What are you going to use this next bike for? --D-y

May I?
It was _certainly_ involved in a head-on crash.
I believe it can be straightened out, realigned if needed, checked
overall (by the way, how about the fork?) and finally repainted.

However, it is simply not worth it.

I'll have to disagree with the statement that the Super Record is a
criterium bike. I've been riding a Gios Super Record since 1978 and it does
not in anyway handle like a criterium bike. The Compact version has shorter
chainstays and wheelbase than the Super Record. I don't know if the front
end geometry is the same on both models. Most criterium bikes are hard to
ride no handed. The Super Record is not.

Well, that's one of the reasons people liked those old blue Gios
frames-- they were good-handling crit bikes (winking emoticon
deleted).

I heard/understood "1978", and can only repeat, those medallion Gios
frames were admired/prized as crit bikes. Didn't hurt anything,
either, when you could buy one with accessories in a large s-foam
packing/presentation case...

I don't know about "most" crit bikes. A few I do know about, including
Merckx, Zullo, Roberts, and extending to my Hans Schneider track bike
(x-tra tight, upright sprinter pattern) are (or were) also good-
handling bikes that were not a problem to ride no-hands. --D-y
