I have swum probably a hundred open water races, most 2-4km, some 8km.
I'm not swimming any now, due to the low interest in masters swimming in
    Norway.

Any notable places, like the English channel, or Alcatraz to San Francisco?

Your travel budget is better than mine. But I did the Chicago Big
    Shoulders 5K last month.

The only place I had to travel to was Hawaii. I lived in the other
places. Well, I traveled to Sydney. And Melbourne. But I was living in
Adelaide. I swam in a race in Singapore, too, but that was in a pool. It
was like swimming in a bath.

You mean: in competition, or just for pleasure?
You know, all triathletes do open water swimming.
This year, they resumed the Paris Triathlon, and I had the privilege of
swimming my 1.5k in the Seine river.
Plus many others in a lot of different and unknown places, in rivers, seas,
    lakes...
