This time of the year it'll be impossible to avoid the mud for me. So far
so good though. In particular they're handling the wet, squishy mud that
you get under grass after days of rain better than other tyres I've tried.

I went to these from Continental Explorer Pros, and expected to have poorer
cornering on them as they were more square cut. How wrong I was!!
Turns out that they're far better in all aspects than the conti's, I'll be
using them from now on, replacing with similar....

I didn't get them specifically for mud. In fact, I hope to be avoiding as
much as I can with these tyres.
I'm moving house in a couple of weeks and I'll be doing a lot more hardpack
clay, pineforest and light gravel with a lot less mud.

But..... when that clay in the area does turn to mud it becomes that sticky,
yellow, gluey stuff that sticks to everything. I think that those side
knobs on the XC Pro's will scoop it up and hold it.

I have to say, anyone who can get to Northern Spain has to do this. I get
twitches even now...
And if you look closely you can see almost see the village at the top (about
1700Metres up), with a descent to around 150Metres at the bottom...
Still it wasn't too bad for us, as we descended through cloud at the very
top... starting above and dropping through a thin band before seeing the
full monty, and by then it was a long walk back to the top ;o)

Anyway, you know those days you're glad to be alive, finishing this descent
was all about that :o)

Two of us, a load of dodgy maps (and one good one) and the patience to cycle
up the side of the mountains to go down them.
There are plenty of tours that do go around the area, but in talking to a
guide he did point out that they'd never take a group down there, and having
done it I can see why. It's not so much dangerous, as treacherous. I.e.
although if you take it steady you'll be OK, one slip and it was over the
edge and free fall down through the clouds...
Marvellous.
Twas amusing though, as there were a few walkers going up, and they all said
we'd never make it in all seriousness, which when we were near the top
wasn't really what we wanted to hear!!!

The best of it was that this was the end of 5 hours cross country and
climbing... starting with a truck lift up to 1100m to a 800m cable car ride,
taking us to around 1900m. Then descent to a town some 800m lower before a
climb back to the village lost at the top.
I have to say it was one of the most amazing rides in my life, bike or
otherwise ;o)

Another ride we did we ended up climbing for several hours in blazing heat,
real tough stuff like carrying the bike for Kms etc, anyway, all hail
mountain refuge huts and their stock of food (and yeah we left cash to pay
for it!). Without that we'd have been skirting on the edge of serious
fatigue which would have made the descents all the more serious.

Also a classic was cycling up a concrete path into the mountains in the rain
and seeing the lightening crossing at eye height further down the valley...

I think a guided tour would be fun, but there wouldn't be the sense of
achievement of doing it by ourselves. I suspect we pushed on much harder
because of it too.

Anyway anyone interested in going there (Potes in Cantabria/Northern Spain)
give me a shout, I'll happily recount my experiences in boring detail,
complete with cheap accommodation, cheap flights etc...

on a tire that doesn't have very many miles on it.

Were your Pana's made in Taiwan or Japan? Do you lock up your wheels when
braking?
