My sit places feel badly bruised today. It's making walking difficult. I did 5 miles more than I did last Sunday, and I even managed to get a few miles in on Thursday. I haven't changed my saddle, I haven't changed anything about my normal bike configuration. The only remarkable thing about today's ride was that the last 30 or so miles were in the rain, and I sort of disconnected myself from the unpleasantness and left my body to get on with the ride without me. I don't know why I'm hurting, or how to prevent the same in future. Any suggestions?

So the difference is a wet bum. Get some pants of a material that remains comfortable when wet. For autumn/winter wear, a track suit might do the job - it's just about getting cool enough for that to be an option.
I expect googling nappy rash might turn up more info, some of which might be relevant.

First of is clothes. Seams are bad, so if you're wearing jeans or the like, consider changing to lycra. Underwear can also rub. I avoid cotton on long rides.
Saddle position has a huge effect. See <url:www.sheldonbrown.com/saddles.html> and look at angle and front back position. This has sorted my saddle out.
The link also deals with everything else, like saddle shape and pading (less is more).

If you're going down the lycra shorts route then consider ditching the underwear altogether. They are generally designed to be a single skin and many folk find they work better that way.
