  1. A dodgy knee has had me spending too much time in front of the computer. The
result is this interactive wee map where you can enter your ticklist and

"Name Labels" I am refering here to the text that appears when the mouse is
hovered over an image, all the blue and red dots are infact images and all
have their hill name attributed to their "alt" tag

Does Opera normally show these mouse over text things?

No, that's an IE abuse of the system. Alt tags where created to be a
invisible element for those browsers that don't have graphics enabled.

The best solution would probably be to have a JS hover event over the
images to display the tag, the other solution is to use a CSS event to
    change them.

    Or use Flash.

I like the idea, and if you can get the JS rollover to work then it's a
great graphical display of the locations. A couple of suggestions for
the map is to have major towns/locations to give an idea of area and/or
do borders to refer to the tick list.

Hope your knee gets better soon.

It all works as it should here, using Win2000 + IE6. I'm a red-socks and
bobble-hat man in the home counties myself, but it's always good to see
people producing and sharing handy little items like this.

Sorry to be picky Stuart, but you have Sgorr Dhearg & Sgorr Dhonuill
(Glencoe) the wrong way around. I only noticed because Sgorr Dhearg is
    my only Munro to date.

Someone may have already replied to this effect, but I'm using Google

The HTML spec, apparently, recommends the title tag over the alt tag
for this kind of thing. IE, Netscape and Mozilla will display
annotations as tooltips if they are in the title tag. Probably Opera
as well, though I haven't tried it. Firefox (and poss. Mozilla)
doesn't display all of the tag, however, though it probably should,
    and probably will one day.

Some good pictures, liked the one looking up Loch Linnhe, also liked your
route, so many park at the bridge and go up and come down the same path, It
is well worth going up via West Laroch and traversing the whole mountain,
this route also take you along that magnificent curving arete that is nearly
    worth the effort alone,

Many thanks for this Colin, I have now replaced the Alt tag for a Title tag,
I hope this has cured the tooltip text problem experianced by non IE uses.
When should the Alt tag be used and what is its true purpose, also what does
    it stand for!

I think that Alt is short for 'alternative text' and that if a browser
is set to not display images, or if it's a text-only browser, then the
Alt text is displayed in place of an image (and sometimes in the image's
rectangle while it is being loaded).

The Title tag, on the other hand, is intended, I believe, as additional
information on an object. While only images have an Alt tag, pretty
much any piece of HTML can have a Title tag. Including images. Not
sure why. The only practical use I've found for the Title tag is, as
you are aiming to do, to provide tooltips across multiple browsers.

I'm using Mozilla 1.7 - The screen & the dots look fine & change colour
correctly, but the name label doesn't appear. Nice idea though.

    Bernie

does mouse over text labels normally work ok in Mozilla?

Good question! Never having thought about, I had to try it out, but it
seems to work as you'd expect from ie6. Maybe not everywhere though..

  14. Good work Stuart! It didn't take me long to tick my successes - 1
    (you can guess which).

With regard to lists other than the Munros, I've been thinking about
using some kind of (free) user registration on my website so that
people can log the mountains they have visited. At the moment, the
maps only show whether I have climbed the mountain or not. My site
only covers England and Wales, but does include Nuttalls, Marilyns,
    Hewitts and Wainwrights.

For my maps, I use Javascript to position the mountains (triangles)
based on their grid references. This means I can also provide a
Search facility, so that only the mountains that satisfy the search
    criteria are displayed. See
    http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/simon.edwardes/Search.htm

I'm working on a new version of the site which uses a MySql database
and PHP script, which should speed up the display of pages and search
results. Once this is in place, I'll be able to provide a
registration facility and enable other people to log their bagging
successes on the database, and display them on the map.

If Ireland is your bag, Simon Stewart provides similar facilities on
    his website http://www.simonstewart.ie/

I primarily done the Munro map for my own use, and would be absolutly
delighted if others found it of interset and also used it! As for other
lists, Yes, if there is enough interest I would be very happy to do other
maps, however in the imeadiate future I will be trying to expand on my Munro
    map,

If anybody wants something to work independently of IE etc

Unfortunately entering both "title" and "alt" in the image tag cause
Netscape7+ to show niether. I have therefor scripted the page to use only
the alt tag in netscape 4 (browsers that respond to "document.layers!"😉 and
use the title attribute in all other browsers.

I now think that the hill names will appear as tool tip text on the map page
    in most browsers!

also the statistical section works in earlier versions of netscape!
