  1. A little progress report after a month...

This is my second round of Atkins, after losing 18 lbs last summer. I
strayed from the WOE, but remained "carb conscious" for the next 10 months.
I wasn't able to stay on Atkins diligently after our move from Seattle, WA
to Holland...factors like culture shock, not knowing where to shop for
anything, not having an outdoor grill, all had an impact on my WOE.
Luckily, I did not gain back the 18 lbs from last summer. I think this is
probably because of our decision not to buy a car here in Holland, and
having to do ALL errands by bike.

    I am a 36 year-old, 5'11" woman with about 20 lbs to lose now. I read the
Atkins NDR book again, and carefully followed the Induction rules. The
4-day headache I had from giving up caffeine was horrible, but I stuck it
out (thanks in part to this NG)! After the first week of Induction, I was
down 6 lbs. Since Induction, I've stayed at 20-30 carbs a day, but
introduced some non-Induction foods. I'm not eating processed "low-carb"
foods, since they aren't even sold here in Holland.

Now at 4 weeks in, I'm still only down 6 lbs, but I've lost an inch each off
my bust, waist and hips. I'm not too discouraged after no loss for 3 weeks
for a couple of reasons - first reason, my TOM. Also, the NDR book says
that folks with under 30 lbs to lose may not get the dramatic weight loss
experienced by some - like I experienced myself last summer. (5 weeks and
18 pounds off was GREAT!) I am, however, anxiously awaiting the Whoosh
Fairy every night in my dreams.

I realize that I need to pump up my exercise routine. Currently I'm taking
the dogs on 2 half-hour walks a day, and running all errands by bike. (You
name it - dry cleaning, taking out the recycling, butcher, cheese shop,
etc. - all self propelled.) I just ordered a couple of aerobic DVDs from
the US that I'm really looking forward to starting. I'm also hoping that
more exercise will help with my nagging lower back pain.

I would like to start counting calories using Fitday, but I'm finding a
couple things frustrating. Namely, the initial ramp-up, and the fact that
the running daily carb total doesn't subtract fiber. Any advice here would
be appreciated. I am using Atkins.com to keep track of my weight and
measurements, but this site isn't as robust as Fitday.

Couple of other positive changes I've made - drinking a lot more water, and
taking vitamins. Therefore, I'm peeing a lot of brightly colored pee. Also
making sure I'm getting enough fiber, which I sometimes have to supplement.

All in all, I feel good, and I'm trying to keep my spirits up - even though
I'm not experiencing as much weight loss as I did last summer. I read this
NG every day, and I find everyone's quips and stories very motivating.

Any comments or advice is welcome -

Can you amplify on the drycleaning errands by bike.

I have always managed to make a lot of wrinkles whenever I've tried it.
    Any help is gratefully appreciated.

  3. S t a c i,

You are doing very well! I think it's commendable that you managed to
maintain while dealing with the stress of moving, not to mention moving to a
foreign country. Just keep doing what you're doing and eventually the
weight will drop. And get started on your aerobics when your DVDs come to
    you.

Regarding Fitday, it is DEFINITELY easier for me to use, having used
Atkins.com, too. I've found that I need to count calories as well, so the
pounds keep coming off (but slowly.) You might want to keep track of fiber
elsewhere (maybe in the Journal section). I've been interested in tracking
    fiber, too.

    Congratulations on your progress!

    Hi, Staci!

Since you're biking so much now, you've probably built some muscle.
In that case, the scale might now move, but the measurements will
shrink. An inch off the bust, hips and thighs is a great
    accomplishment!

Also, sometimes our body needs time to adjust to the weight loss,
and we might stall for a while. That's ok too. As long as you keep
eating properly and exercising, you'll get there.

And, keep in mind, that the last pounds are the toughest.

Good luck! Your results are excellent!

  5. I can only get pants/suits home from the drycleaners without wrinkles - not
shirts. I just carefully fold pants in half and slide them into the
saddlebags of my bike. I have to do all of my husband's shirts at home -
there is no way I could get them home unwrinkled - or even dry most days!

The other option is to throw the drycleaning over your shoulder, grasping
the hangers and riding with one hand. I'm just always worried that the
clothes are going to slide out of the bottom the bag onto the road...then I
would have to start the process all over again.
