This month's Outside Magazine has an article about Hamilton, and Tugboat
(the dog) figured most prominently in the writing and the pictures.

emotional roller-coaster surrounding the loss of his best friend.

"Tugboat was like a family member to me," he said. "A lot of people don't
know me or know the situation; they might think 'oh he's just a dog' but for
me, it's hard, it's hard...just as hard as losing a family member. But life
goes on and certainly (the loss of Tugboat) is a hundred times harder than
what I went through last year."

When we asked Hamilton it he thought the spirit of Tugboat might be with him
during the rest of the Tour, Ty smiled and said "Yeah, I've got his tag
right here", showing us Tug's red ID tag held around his neck on a white
ribbon"

Because we're in the thick of tournament season and I can't risk their
feet, my dogs haven't been able to come mountainbiking with me for the
last couple of months. They haven't forgotten, though. Every time I
get ready to go, they all run downstairs and sit hopefully in front of
the door. Cooper, a JRT, never gets to go because he's too little to
keep up, but he still goes and sits by the door with Scully and Zane (BCs).

Flyball tournament season. Flyball is sort of a dog relay race. A team
may include up to 6 dogs, but only four may run in any given heat. They
go down over a series of 4 hurdles, hit a spring-loaded box that
launches a tennis ball, grab the ball, then back down over the hurdles
to the starting gate where the next dog is preparing to run. First team

The teams are sorted into divisions based on their seed times - slow
teams race slow teams, fast teams race against other fast teams. The
races are started by a Nascar-style light tree, and passes are monitored
by an electric eye sensor at the starting gate. It's great fun for the
dogs and handlers both, and fun to watch as well.

I captain our club's "A" team - Bad Co. - that includes Scully, handled
by my daughter, and Zane, run by yours truly (Cooper is still in
training). Flyball, as played in the fast divisions, can be hard on a
dog's feet - they run on tuffspun rubber matting and if their feet
aren't properly calloused they can actually blister and tear their pads.
If my dogs come mountain biking with me and manage to cut or tear a
pad (which happens often enough to make it a legitimate concern), it
could take as long as 4 weeks to heal and rebuild the callous.

The mental image I had from your reference to tournaments was that all
the local mountain bikers were training for some upcoming race, and
