Dear John and others,

First I dragged poor Sheldon into Boston for the sake of art. Next I armed him with a well-oiled
bicycle chain. Now I have degraded his address to West Newton-ville for the sake of a dreadful pun.
(There are two others, one involving a popular spelling ambiguity and the other an omitted
financial hyphen.)

It seems that no one is safe. "A harmless drudge" once warned us that "he who would pun would pick a
pocket," but luckily Johnson did not live to see the horrors made possible by newsgroups.

Some truly vile poly-lingual puns already lie waiting to glorify Jobst Brandt next Friday, yet Chalo
Contina's apotheosis the following week will be remarkable for its almost religious freedom from
puns (although one may occur to me in the interim).

I am astonished by the depths to which so many of you sank so quickly and willingly, and hope to
enjoy more of the same.
