I would like to say a big thank you to all the courteous drivers on Melbourne's roads. As a new cycling commuter (mainly for environmental reasons), I have found motorists to be patient and polite when I have been riding on shared roads. All road users are capable of doing the wrong thing, but a little patience and consideration on both sides goes a long way.

Overall, I think that Kathy is correct about the courteous drivers. In my
own experience, having commuted almost daily 14 km each way to and from work
since Christmas, I'd say that over 95% of drivers are OK. It's the few
percent who try to maim or kill me that upset me.

I tend to like the letter, as it probably serves to build some sort of
"friendship" between drivers and cyclists, rather than the usual [censored] we
hear.

Over the past week i have been emailing the Herald/Sun several letters to
the editor about cycling, admittedly not as charitable towards motorists as
Kathy's. None have been published so far. Obviously they do not meet the
high intelligence level of the average letters in the paper.

But what could I replace her with? Remembering that she spent 9 hours
or so in a car with me yesterday to keep me company at a funeral.
