Fan turn-out was reportedly remarkably low at the Olympic Road Race in Athens.
Likewise, despite a strong last-minute marketing push, turn-out was also a
bit sparse for the Olympic pick contest. However, what lacked in quantity
was made up for with quality, as four of the eight entries had Gold Medalist
Paolo Bettini as their #1 pick. Other favored riders, such as Alexandre Vinokourov,
Jan Ullrich, and Oscar Freire disappointed, scoring at best deep in the standings.
Davey Crockett, with his astute choice of Robbie McEwan for #2, differentiated himself
from the other Bettiniphiles to claim the #1 spot in the standings after this,
the most prestigious of the Olympic road events.
The contest continues tomorrow with the women's RR.
