Both yesterday (7/3) and today the OLN broadcasts started off with
poor sound and picture quality. On both days it cleared up right
around 8:00 AM (PT) so I'm guessing the problem originated with OLN,
particularly since other channels were coming in OK.

A while back, some of the auto racing TV broadcasters started using
"talk free laps" to let those at home get more of a feeling of being
there.

I wouldn't mind hearing the Le Tour roll through an area hearing
nothing but the bikes and background noise.

And how would you do that? What you would hear is the motorcycle

Put the mic on the side of the road as the tour passes. I'm only
talking of the pack passing one point, just as a spectator would hear
it.
