Outdoor Life Network Changing Its Name
    By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
    Filed at 2:36 p.m. ET

STAMFORD, Conn. (AP) -- The Outdoor Life Network is changing its name to
    Versus.

The new name will take effect in September, in time for the NHL season, OLN
    announced Monday.

''Versus is a word that perfectly captures the essence of our brand. It is
immediate shorthand for competition and has a range that can suit everything
from stick and ball sports, to bull riding, to field sports,'' network
President Gavin Harvey said. ''We felt it was a slam dunk, and sports fans
    we talked to all agreed.''

OLN, which began soliciting suggestions for a new name about a year ago,
said Versus was chosen ''not only for its bold nature, but because it
    universally evokes competition.''

''Whether it is man versus man, man versus beast or team versus team, the
channel will celebrate sports at its best, where athletes and sportsmen
compete at their highest levels with the greatest passion,'' the network
    said in a statement.

Before acquiring the rights to the cable broadcasts of NHL games, OLN was
best known for covering Lance Armstrong and the Tour de France.

That's pretty friggin stupid. Goes along with most of the new
programming too. How about "Blows" that's got a lot of relevant
    meanings to their programming too.

So they're naming themselves after a Pearl Jam album?

Maybe OLN Canada will rename itself the Bull Riding & Doggy Show channel.

OLN had to change their name because "Only Lance Network"
didn't make any sense after Lance retired.

I hope they didn't spend a whole lotta money on this new name. It makes
about as much sense as a restaurant named with two adjectives, Western
    Sizzlin'.

If Floyd wins the Tour this July, maybe they'll keep OLN, because then we
can call it the Only Landis Network!

What a huge mistake, after they are finially getting some name
recongnition as OLN. I predict they will re-think this after the
    ridicule dies down...

  10. Another brilliant rebranding - anyone know which brand strategy
consulting firm cashed in on this?

I suggest they rebrand to "Sunday", because it's the only day of the
    week I watch OLN.

  11. I think Bill has about the best description I can think of.

OLN isn't even bright enough to publish their program times in zone
times. They expect you to correct for your time at whatever zone you're
in and then they CHANGE the times around as suits them.

I normally go up to the Sports Bar and have a beer and a hamburger and
watch the racing. But it cost about half as much as buying the DVD from
WCVs and if I buy the race I don't get the indigestion and I can watch
the race any number of times without having to put up with commercials
about [censored] I'm not interested in.

I think that OLN is moving from a position of difficult to market (but
little competition for) sports, to easy to market but EXTREMELY
expensive sports and quite frankly, football fans aren't going to put
up with the sort of [censored] that OLN normally runs on.

Do you suppose they've checked with America's Funniest Videos on
their right to use the term?

  13. Thank god for cycling.tv and foreign language stations that cover the major
    tours.

OLN is a corpse in waiting.
