So, who's got the oldest helmet in regular use? I have an MSR (the old egg yolk variety) in the shed somewhere but that's not been used for ages. I got that in 1979 (I think).

I have one of those bright orange "Ultra Cool" jobbies of similar vintage that I throw on, when going to the shops, to keep the helmet police happy. It's not my main helmet though so I'll step aside and let the true shockers appear..

I bought a V1-Pro in about 1984. A black one. Still have it. It hangs on the gravity rack with the steel tourers from the same vintage. I put it on occasionally but the foam pads are crumbling. Always strikes me how bloody heavy it is compared to the modern helmets.

Bugger, I have both of those, but it would be nit picking about the dates. No wait a minute, I brought mine (MSR) direct from Chas Coin when he first brought them into the country. Occassionally use it in winter with a beanie (sans pom-pon) underneath as the soft foam has totally disintergrate, but last use would have been Winter 2003.
Now the Bell , we might have you on solely on numbers, but not on distance. Took swmbo for a bicycle ride on Sunday. Only 7kms along the Camden bicycle path. I'd like to claim that I use mine daily, but I'm not really that energetic atm.
What do you do for padding in the Bell V1? The original sizing pads and all the replacements have almost all totally disintergrated (swmbo has 3 of 8 left). I wear a homemade toweling headband instead.
WHITE Stackhats - have a couple in storage. Anyone still wear them? Any sightings in the wild? They used to pinch at the sides something shocking & give me headaches, possibly due to the lack of circulation. 🙄

After taking a large road vs head pounding around my left temple area about 6 weeks back due to bike breakage, I can only recommend that people think very seriously about their current helmets if they are not up to scratch.
My 6 month old Limar 909 was cactus, but I got away with only mild concussion.. If it wasnt fitted correctly or strength wise it didnt hold up I'd either have been spending a few nights away from home looking at nurses, or hanging out with Pantani..

I second these sentiments. I had a stack last December when the frame on my fixie broke. I hit the back of my head on the road, I assumed very gently. However, it turned out that I cracked the helmet through several of its ribs. I'm sure it would not have felt gentle if I wasn't wearing a helmet or it had slipped off during the fall.
I really must replace that V1-Pro, even if the yellow and black colour scheme match the bike.

Perhaps your head would not have even contacted the ground if you weren't wearing your helmet. The brain does a pretty good job of protecting itself and as soon as it detects the head accelerating in an unwanted direction (i.e. towards an impact) it would try to stop it, in this case by trying to slow/stop the backwards movement using the neck. Stick an extra protrusion on the back of it (your helmet) and your brain ceases to 'know' where your external limits are.

To replace worn/rotting foam inserts, I just go to a LBS and ask what they've got. They've usually got a bag of bits left over from all the helmets they've carried and something will fit, even if you have to do a bit of trimming. That being said, the V1-Pro gets used for commuting and I try to not build up too much of a sweat which means that padding lasts a bit longer.

I have some pads from a busted Louis Garneau helmet. They are the modern style - smaller funky shapes, rather than long, straight foam bands. If they are of any use to anyone (in Melbourne) take 'em, coz they'll get binned soon.

Yeah. I recently stuffed my helmet falling on my side. My shoulder took the impact, and the side/top of my helmet contacted the ground. Result was a busted Met Strad helmet, and me not at all happy. If I hadn't been wearing it, I doubt my head would have contacted the ground at all.
Still, it was a good way to fix the stinky deteriorating pads, as then I had to buy a new one.
