Probably because her DNF wasn't covered on TV. I was wondering what happened
to her.
No doubt she'll also be heavily criticised by the self-appointed back seat
drivers in this forum.

As good as the coverage generally was, the weakness was runners disappearing
and then no mention. Not just fading farther back, but also DNFing.

Either way, most likely she DNF'ed to save herself to win a big-pursed Fall

Yes. At least they did show Jen Rhines (local to me) finishing.
But last night I heard along the way in their coverage that 16 (iirc)
of the 82 starters did not finish the race. Isn't that awfully high?
It wouldn't be too surprising if so, given the heat, but yikes, 1 in 5?!

I happened to have an old newpaper clipping - 19 of 100 male marathon
runners DNFed here in the 2000 olympics - similar course but a lot cooler.

That is surprisingly high. I did not think the Sydney course was all that
hilly (over the course of several days I ran the whole course while visiting
there).

I have no idea, but I do not hold it against PR for crying. I cannot
imagine what she was going through. I have felt like dropping out of 3
marathons but no one would have really cared and my home country certainly
would not have made it the lead story on every news report.

to estimate exactly from the profile because its divided among a number
of climbs but the total must have been close to that in Athens.
But instead of the sustained climb of the first 10k in Athens, Sydney
has 10 hills from 25-41km.
I thought these sort of profile wer typical for Olympic courses?

Atlanta was a little hilly but nothing like Athens in terms of sustained
climbs. Barcelona was flat until the final climb the stadium in the last
couple of miles. LA was flat. Montreal and Berlin were probably flat. Dave
Martin's book on the Olympic marathon has course profiles I believe but I am
too lazy to go downstairs and get it.
