after a hundred or so posts. At that point, it's safe to stop reading
and ignore the thread because there probably won't be anything else

I delete about 80% of the posts without opening them. I have filters
set to flag my favorite authors -- and whether or not I read them will
first depend on the name of the thread. When I first started Usenet, I
thought I was required to read every post. Don't ask why I thought that
- only God in all her wisdom knows why.

One thing that can improve your and others experience is to write a
subject line that's somewhat to the point.

This thread's subject line would have been better called "The Longest
Thread?" or something that peouple could later go back and search for the
thread and reconstruct it for example.

There was a thread about burgers, but the subject line had a typo
"bugers" which every newsreader that I know, wouldn't find if users
searched for burgers. As a result, all the beneficial posts about burgers
are for lack of a better word, lost.

You get the idea.

But it's anarchy in Usenet for the most part. Don't write a libel about
anyone and have fun!

And don't feed the trolls! They're fed every night after Usenet closes.

was... There were things like "the longest thread", "who posted the most",
etc.

The best way I've found to achieve that goal is simply to not
read any posting in which quoted earlier text has not been
sufficiently trimmed. Hey, if you can't be troubled to spend
a couple of seconds deleting all the lines of previous cr....uh,
text...from your "me, too!" response, I can't be troubled to
wade through it all just to find your contribution.
