    But you're unlikely to suffer any brain damage, however
    minor, if you didn't at least briefly lose consciousness. I
    can certainly recall some pretty startling impacts of skull
    with hard objects when I was small, some of which lacerated
    my scalp, but none of which caused any loss of consciouness.
    H'ever, all of these impacts were at running speeds, and
    there are good reasons to suppose that evolution would have
    taken account of those.

    Undoubtedly true, but what you are talking about there is
    *brain* injuries. I'm talking about a few bumps to the
    head with no loss of consciousness or other effects other
    than a sore head. The skull does a damned good job of
    protecting the brain in the majority of falls (unless you
    stick a helmet on

    However it could also be said that many kids without
    behavioural difficulties had insignificant brain injuries.
    Without a true analysis of a significant portion of the
    population, which would be difficult (do you remember all
    your bumps and scrapes as a kid?) then to imply some sort of
    causal relationship is stretching the point a bit far.

    The brain is a different density from the fluid surrounding
    it, so it can bump about in the skull, even when the skull
    is uncompromised and there are no rotational forces.
    Subdural haemorrhages don't always lead to any loss of
    consciousness.

    I did have a fair few scrapes - including once being hit by
    a several-kg piece of wood that fell on me from the rafters
    in the garage. I also had one of those lethal chopper-style
    bikes that tend to dump you on your head if you accelerate.
    You're right in that I can't prove this one incident
    permanently dented my academic prospects, but nor can you
    prove that it didn't.

    I know of some case-studies of people such as boxers,
    footballers, roller-coaster riders... that link several
    types of brain-trauma to relatively minor impacts - often
    repeated. All I'm arguing is that it's silly to dismiss
    bumps on the head as 'trivial' just because they didn't lead
    to hospital.

    Given that helmets may cause the sort of rotational injuries
    implicated in many of the case-studies above, I'm not even
    suggesting that they're the solution. I'd prefer to see less
    choppers and more kiddie-style recumbents, instead.

  10. I work on aircraft and deal with aluminum alloys daily,
    specifically 2024 and 6061. The biggest problem with
    aluminum is that it work hardens. Steel can be loaded an
    almost infinite number of times just so long as you never
    go past it's point of failure. With aluminum, each load,
    no matter how small, slightly flexes and slowly work
    hardens the aluminum. Depending on how much the
    engineering over built the piece to extend the "failure"
    time determines the actual life so long as the aluminum
    piece never stressed to its point of failure. I help
    replace structural components all the time that fail
    because a section has become so hard and brittle from
    slight flexing or vibration. Aside from the actual rip or
    crack, many of the pieces look absolutely pristine. It's
    something you have to deal with when using aluminum.

    Don't you mean fatigue limit, and not failure?

    Failure is an ambiguous term in this context - does it refer
    to yield, exceeding UTS, or fracture (all of which will
    occur at different strain values for most steels under most
    conditions)?

    If we use Arne's definition of failure, then Sticker Jim's
    statement is definitely false, as the fatigue limit for any
    steel is below the yield strain [1], which of course is
    below the strain for UTS and fracture, unless the steel is
    brittle (which is unusual).

    In addition, in many applications yielding without fracture
    would also be considered a failure, as the member that
    yielded would no longer serve its intended function.
    Therefore, Arne's statement, "failure means it cracked or
    broke" is an incomplete definition of failure.

    [1] And if a metal is stressed beyond yield several times it
    will fracture even if UTS is not exceeded.
