I doubt you can get an odometer-only these days, but I
remember my dad having a mechanical one back in the early
80's that mounted down next to the front skewer.
Today, you're looking at a bike computer, which will have an
odometer and a bunch of other things (average speed,
stopwatch, maximum speed, and other features). They work by
having a sensor mounted on the fork and a little magnet on a
spoke that the sensor "sees" every time the wheel goes
around. The computer will have a calibration setting to so
it knows your correct wheel circumfrence (taking wheel and
tire size into account and using good ol' Pi*R^2).
That's pretty much it. Every bike computer I've used has a
total distance and a trip distance that you can reset.

I use a computer strictly as an o-duh-meter, for PM
purposes.

Wow! Mine must have ben lacking slightly since they
only were interested in the circumference of the
wheel and knew nothing of the area of a circle! 😉

OK, OK, I got my old geometry formulas screwed up. Good
thing I'm not in the business of building things! I
stand corrected. I'll balame my boy. He was getting a
new tooth (or something else that made him cry instead
