My question is why? Why not just buy a moped for $600 instead of going
through all that trouble on a frame that would really take a beating on
NYC streets?

That's easy... Why not? Dija ever notice that coolest projects are
almost always the ones that make the least sense.

That's how my brother and I got our first (and last) tandem. Two beater
frames, two wheels (a front and a back), and a friendly LBS in 1965 that would
supply over-length cables and chains as needed. It was bolted together (yes,
bolted) using the rear down-tube and the forward seat-stays. It definitely
cornered better one way than the other ;-)

installed. I've wanted to get one for a while because it would take as
near zero gas as any vehicle but still move at a good 45 mph (though not
legally) if you peddled.

This is what I'm after doing - getting an old moped engine, or something
similar with an automatic clutch/torque converter, and bunging it into an
old steel MTB frame. Keep the pedals and gears on it, drive the rear wheel
from the engine using a friction roller on the top of the rear tyre or
something. All just for the sheer hell and fun of the project itself ',;~}~

Shaun aRe - Would also consider a strimmer engine of around 30 + cc's, if
anyone has one going spare (= 'free', heh...).

heads all loose anyway. I'll bring it along next at the next ride if you're

I replaced it soon after, this one is missing the guard at the bottom and
the heads all loose which made me think it would be a good candidate for
project 'rocketbike'.

Of course this is all on the condition that you use said rocketbike in the
proper manner (shown halfway down this page...)
