  1. If the obesity stats put out by the government are based on the BMI, then
they are pretty suspect. I've been lo-carbing for about 2 1/2 years now, at
5ft 9ins I weigh 176 and my body fat is 9.5%, but guess what? According to
my BMI of 25.98 I'm overweight. Lotta horse manure IMO

I have noticed this about other government statistics. The ones that come to
mind are the lowering of the cholesterol values and the blood pressure
values. Now, your cholesterol has to be lower to be "safe" and your blood
pressure that was in the normal range a few years ago is suddenly on the
high side. They keep moving the finish line!

It isn't horse manure, it is simply a guide, no different to the "the
average family has 2.5 children" type of indicator.

There will be many exceptions to it. If you weigh 176 at 5'9" and only
have a body fat percentage of 9.5, then you must have an extremely large
amount of muscle. People who are heavily muscled are always outside
these guidelines, as is usually stated when BMI instructions are found.

BTW, BMI isn't a Government set standard, it is a Government accepted
    standard.

    Regards

    David

OK take President Bush. Here's a guy who's no Arnie, but who is in pretty
good shape. But at 194, and 6ft his BMI is 26.3, in the overweight
category. I just think this table sets the bar way too high.

Bush weighs 200 and is 5'11 and 3/4" tall according to today's paper....
    He's even more overweight!

Huh, my bad. Must've used some old numbers and he fattened up and shrank
during the campaign. Anyway, to have people like him being told to lose
weight is ludicrous, he needs to focus on the deficits and the war in Iraq.

You know, a lot of the doctors involved in moving the government's
guidelines on cholesterol levels down are financially involved in companies
that make cholesterol lowering drugs. Hmmmmmmmm

Well, BMI is just a guideline, for sure. Then again, I' 5'8" and in the
low 120s -- the OP is 1 inch taller and 50 pounds heavier than I am.
    That's a big difference.

That's true. But IMO the key measurement is body fat % (which in my case is
9.5), plus of course lab work to show how cholesterol and all that is doing.
I do believe that there is a weight problem in America - you only have to go
to a crowded place like an airport to see it, but those who are unhealthily
overweight are obvious and to have a table which classifies as "overweight"
people like President Bush is quite unhelpful.

Not only that, but it clouds the total picture of how many actually are
overweight, plus, it gives those who are grossly overweight little or no
hope at all. I can imagine one of them saying "Well, if I have to get down
to THAT number, I'll never make it--so why try!" I lost 40 pounds and just
barely squeaked under the number needed not to be "obese" even though I ride
    bikes and swim laps.

I would imagine that you see a lot of people that you might not believe are
obese but are so and are/will suffer consequences from it.

Truth hurts. Buck up. He's overweight.

The truth never clouds the picture, it is the picture unclouded.

That obsession with failure has nothing to do with the truth.

  18. Very convincing.

I read it in the paper right after the new guidelines were announced. I'll
have to do a web search to see if I can find the story. Or you could do it
    yourself.

WOW! I found a link to the story in less than 5 minutes

    http://www.newstarget.com/001372.html

Just do a search for (cholesterol guidelines drug companies) and you'll find
    several articles about it.

    Is this proof enough?
