I remember seeing a photo in Mountain Bike Action, I think it was. This is back when Johnny
T was hawking Farmer Johns, so that dates it pretty well. There was a this shot of one of
the Reeking Crew testing the Tomac Signature Mongoose, riding with his t-shirt under his
bibs. Such a serious faux-pas, the image still haunts me. At the time ('87 or '88) I was
actually riding occasionally with those idiots, and with a group of guys from OC calling
themselves the Laguna Rads. A whole tribe of crappy riders whose motto was something along
the lines of "if you aren't breaking anything, you aren't going fast enough." It bothered
them quite a bit that here I was, a roadie in lycra, riding just as fast, but smoothly. It
finally got so that I just couldn't stand to ride with them anymore. The final straw was on
the San Juan Trail, on the switchbacks at the end. These guys were all cutting every single
goddamned switchback, and wrecking half the time. I got to the bottom first, waited just
long enough to tell them that they were doing the sport no good (not an exact quote. I was
a bit more
I've seen a few of them since then, but not often. I think that they still don't wear lycra.
