o.t. anti virus software

Hi everyone. I have been hit by a major virus problem on my laptop. Dont
worry am using the desk top machine for this.Am using Panda at the moment
and would like opinions on Norton anti virus software or any other software.

Norton: OK if you can get it to install. It digs quite deep into your
machine, and on some machines it causes major problems. It was OK up til
version 2003, then went downhill fast. I never recommend it now. YMMV.

I agree with the above. I have ditched Norton and am using Sophos now. The
company I work for use it and the company my son works for (A large IT
Company) use it. IT has been OK for me.

AVG ( Free version) set to update every day.
Also have Zone Alarm ( Free Version) and run Spybot every couple of days

I'm running Linux, but I suggested MacOS to avoid the usual "Linux
isn't any good for the desktop, and it's too hard to install"
arguments.

User education and a hardware firewall (DSL routers and NAT are great
for this). If you must use Windows, keep it up to date. Avoid using the
mainstream products (Internet Explorer and Outlook Express) as they are
most targeted. Firefox and Thunderbird are much better, but you still
need to keep abreast of any new exploits.

And another one for AVG. Their paid for version with firewall is even
better. Avast seems to get recommendations as well but I haven't tried
it. Norton is pants (as I can atest as a user for several years before
I switched to AVG from frustration)

I'd be tempted to run linux on it. If I w/c/ouldn't do that then it's the
free antivirus, free firewall, free anti-spyware (get at least two or three
- none of them do the job 100%).

Having put Ubuntu onto a machine for a colleague I was agreeably
suprised by it's ease and shinyness whilst still being nicely Debian-y
to configure from the command line (I don't get on with GUI configs.
Bah!).

Simple and works (Unlike Norton!)

BUT on some machines it slows everything down dreadfully and to disable
those bits you need to do
Start | Run ... | msconfig then untick the avg bits.

Contrary to many other experiences, I have been very happy with Norton
Internet Security 2005. I had all sorts of problems with an earlier
version (2002 I think) but since installing the new one at the beginning
of this year it has performed flawlessly. At the same time I'd agree
with the advice to dump MS products like OE, etc.

Heh - I survived for a few years running windows and using IE and OE, with
only a firewall as protection. I didn't even keep the software up to date.

No virus problems, no spyware problems. (I did occasionally check).

The key is configuring the system to not run stuff you don't want, and not
running stuff you don't trust. Well, I found it quite easy..

(although the firewall is also important - fortunately I've got one in my
ADSL box now).

Because it updates faultlessly EVERY time instead of the haphazard ' no
updates for days then go to the website and search for them because the
server can't cope ' antics of AVG.

Secondly it halts a prospective virus in its tracks and asks what is to be
done with it.AVG used to let the virus in,tell you, and ask you to perform a
full virus check to get rid of it.Which took about an hour.
