  1. I'm coming to visit New York City from Finland in March and was
wondering what I should be thinking of doing. I've been thinking of
going running in Central Park, as it can't be colder than it is here
right now. Should I be thinking of running somewhere else? I guess I'll
have an hour or two of running on most days as my wife waits in line at
    TKTS.

I havn't been keeping track of gear that is sold in the US and is hard
to buy in Finland, but there must have been tons of stuff that is unique
to US -- what kind of stuff have you bought from the US?

Are there any particular stores eiher from an outlet type of experience
or known for amazing variety I should be visiting either in Manhattan
proper or somewhere in NJ? Are there good local stores to see a variety
    of Camelbaks prior to buying?

I'd take urban athletics any day. 92nd and Madison. The owner and most of the
staff are regulars at local races (the owner is also a regular in the awards
list) , and those guys really know their stuff.

  4. Donovan & Lance,

thank you for the tips, I'll be sure to visit both and wire a short
write-up when I get back home on "running souveniers" from the US.

  5. You might also run the SW Manhattan coastline around
    Battery Park etc.

I look at "tourist running" as both getting exercise and
doing some sightseeing at the same time.
Its got to be a place somewhat safe from traffic and
getting lost. A park or waterway can be a good choice.
I have had my share of experiences getting lost.

    try this:
    http://www.campmor.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/campmor/our_retail_store.jsp
the store has most of what you will find on the online catalog. you
will find that the online catalog has about 30 different camelbaks, not
to mention other brands of hydration systems.

you can take a bus from the port authority to the store...about a 30
minute ride...call the store to get the name of the bus stop. here's
    the site for the bus:
    http://www.shortlinebus.com/

new jersey has no sales tax too.

Central Park is probably the best place to run, at least in Manhattan
(I don't know the other boroughs). I try to get in a few loops when
    I'm in town.

There's also a run/bike path that goes pretty much the length of
Manhattan along the west edge; I like to do that one as well. Also one
on parts of the eastern edge, north from the ferry terminal; I'm not
    sure how far it goes.

I also like to run across the Brooklyn Bridge. It can be crowded on
nice days, but pedestrians and cyclists do get their own level away
    from the cars.

    Tempting, but just too easy...

  9. Jim,

thanks for the tip. I'll be renting a car to go to Jersey anyway, so
the campmor is just a short drive away.

    Cheers,
