  1. You want to know who's behind http://www.cyclehelmets.org? Now it can
    be revealed.

An updated site is now online with an "about us" page
(http://www.cyclehelmets.org/mf.html#1121). Sorry it took so long, it
takes a while to get all the necessary agreements and so on. Plus we
are all doing it in our spare time in between fighting off the likes
    of Martlew.

The Editorial Board are responsible for site content, the one who has
done most on that score is of course John Franklin. I thank him
warmly for his tireless work on behalf of cyclists, here and
    elsewhere, most of it unpaid.

Congratulations. I really believe this gives the site much more
    credibility.

Hmm. "Road Safety Researcher, Reading", is that similar to "full time
    road safety campaigner"?

Actually, I see from the SS that in order to protest about not being
able to drive as fast as they like, they propose to drive slowly on
the M4 on 30 April. I expect there's some logic there.

Presumably they'll count every car on teh stetch and claim all of
    them as supporting the protest.

I spend around half as much time per week doing various road and cycle
safety research as I do working on the day job. Nobody said it was
full time - but if you can think of a better description for an
amateur in the field I'd be happy to hear it.

I must say the same went through my mind.
Perhaps Guy, you should try and qualify it some way.

    Excellent work though.

They'll count all teh occupants too - a 50 seater coach being held up
    will mean 50 supporters.

You're too modest - most people (eg P*** S****, yer average journalist,

half the time and effort you do.

Pardon my lack of imagination, but what is the obvious route to that
page for someone who starts from the home page with no magic number?

    On,

    http://www.cyclehelmets.org/mf.html#1045

    the following appears,

    Deaths due to head injury:

    Cyclists: 10
This represents 53% of child cyclist deaths

I find this a little unclear.

Do you mean that 53% of child cyclist deaths are due to head injury even
though the number of deaths is less than 10. Or, are those 10 deaths all
    children?

Do you mean that the number 10 "represents" 53% of child cyclists deaths
even though that particular 10 includes some adult deaths? If so what is
the split between adults and children?

Could you clarify the point if possible?

    I can't.

It is interesting, however, to compare the two sites. Cyclehelmets
one says relentlessly focussing on cyclehelmets to teh exclusion of
all else is actually damaging to cyclist safety. SS one says that
relentlessly focussing on speed limits to the exclusion of all else is
    actually damaging to road safety.

If you dig deeper, you may reach some conclusion as to whether one of
these is true and teh other is false, but I find it interesting that
it is possible to draw those conclusions as a pair.

10 out of the 19 child cyclist deaths in (?)2002 were due to head

A comparison not lost on me, believe me. I think one key difference
may be that the actors behind cyclehelmets.org really do spend a lot
of time pursuing other cycle safety issues. Oh, and there are more
    than one of us ;-)

I take occasional sabbaticals to regain my perspective. We also have
