  1. In this month's issue of 'Food & Wine' - a Cucumber-Basil Martini! Good
lord, they'll call *anything* a martini these days, won't they? And look at
    the first ingredient (shudder):

    1 Tbs. Sugar
    1 Tbs. hot water
1 tsp. finely grated fresh ginger
1 three-inch piece of cucumber, peeled, seeded & diced plus 1 round for
    garnish
    3 basil leaves, 2 torn
    2 oz. gin
    1 Tbs. fresh lime juice

In a small bowl dissolve sugar in hot water. Press the grated ginger
through a fine strainer over the bowl releasing the juice.

In a cocktail shaker, muddle the diced cucumber with the 2 torn basil
leaves. Add the ginger syrup, gin, lime juice and a handful of ice. Shake
well, then strain into a martini glass. Garnish the martini with a slice of
cucumber and the remaining whole basil leaf and serve.

    Makes 1 drink

Hell of a lot of work for one drink, don't you think?

    Yeah....definitely not worth the trouble.

In a bar recently, I saw two young women drinking something that looked like
little bits of cottage cheese floating in coffee with a lot of milk. I don't
recall what they said was in it, but they said "...burp...it curdles more in
your mouth. It's really cool". No comment.

Then, there was the test tube drink trend, which has largely vanished, I
think, at least the bit about serving drinks in test tubes. Out with some
friends years ago, at a chain restaurant, there were a couple of plastic
hotties (hired by Seagram) using their cleavage to get guys to buy these
guaranteed-to-make-you-puke brightly colored drinks in test tubes. They kept
approaching our table and not noticing 6 guys all drinking either beer, or
Jack Daniels, neat. Not very good at reading the market, although they were
selling plenty of it to the next table full of (not surprisingly) young
women, who were really living la vida loca.

Are you sure it said "drink"... you must've misread martini for
    marinade.

Probably wouldn't make a bad salad dressing, either 😉

Bleh... I agree with you and Sheldon though. Might not make a bad marinade
or salad dressing. Just give me either a plain on martini or vodka
martini. I really can't recall when all these fad drinks took on the name
with the word "martini" in it. Anyone remember when it all began?

Im no fan of faux martinis, especially those which veer
toward sweet, fruity or chocolate territory. I prefer gin,
a hint of vermouth and an olive or twist. That said, in the
last few months I've tried a "cucumber infused" and a "habanero
infused" martini. Not bad, but I 'll stick with
the more traditional version. I'll pass on the sugar,
    ginger and basil.

LOL... and I thought *I* was being trendy by ordering a Peppar martini.

Oil and vinegar instead of gin and it might make a nice salad
    dressing.

The glassware companies that make martini glasses must be loving the
faux-tini fad. Martini glasses, hands down the easiest piece of
    stemware to break.

I had a cajun martini in NOLA. gin infused with jalapenos, and a half
jalapenos instead of the olive. It was good, but I still like a
    perfect gin martini.
