They've ruined Lay's Potato Chips! Once my favorite brand because of its delicate thin crispy chips, they've done something to the chips which makes them much more like chips from any other brand. The distinctive elegant crispiness unique to Lay's is GONE!
Granted now that I'm on a low-carb diet, I won't be eating many more potato chips, but I just had to buy a bag when I saw the slogan "Now Even Crispier" on the bag. Could they have improved on perfection?
No! They've made the chips HARDER. Hard is not the same thing as Crisp. They probably hired some engineer who redefined crispiness in terms of something he could measure with his testing machine. Whatever he did, he screwed it up. The new Lay's is not as good as the old Lay's.
ARRGGHHH! At least it will be easier for me to stay on my diet. (Lost 40 lbs in 2003!)

I'm apparently on an all-carb diet. Been eating pasta, rice, potatoes, garlic bread and toast, starchy veggies like corn... and guess what? I've lost 5 lbs. Might have to go buy a bag of Lay's chips to find out what you're talking about 🙂

There is a postiive note to products being changed. Costco used to have great french fries in their fast food kitchen. I used to cycle over the bridge for a moment of perfect fries at Costco. Then they changed the supplier and process of cooking. Since french fries are not healthy, they did me a great favour. If the food industry destroyed all fast food products my improving them, most heart surgeons would be looking for clients/patients!

Don't worry, in 6 months or so when all the nutritionists start bashing the Atkins diet ( they already have ) the masses will all join the next fad diet. Then all the folks falling off the bandwagon can eat their chips again.
Maybe we should start a pool to see what the next fad diet will be. Perhaps the balanced diet, moderate exercise diet?... nah, that doesn't make any sense at all, plus, no one could paste a sticker on it and make $$ of it ;-)

Me too, Jill. And the only carb that gives me real trouble is sugar. Have to stay away from that one.

Here's my vote for the next fad diet: Crunchy foods! Teeth need exercise. If they're not exercised, they fall out. Carrot sticks are allowed on the diet, but carrot juice is not. Potato chips are recommended, but a baked potato with butter is not. Get your 8 glasses of water a day with ice cubes. In the original version of the diet, meats had to be burnt to a crisp, but later versions say that just cooking to medium is O.K. Since that's unpalateable, people lose weight by eating vegetarian. (See? The diet works!)

True enough... I was teasing about all carbs but I certainly don't avoid them. And I walk, a lot. Sometimes at the office I tease I'm going to get some roller-blades and expense them because I'm running from here to there so much.
I've never been one for fad diets or diet pills or whatever. Eat sensibly. Even then only moderate exercise, like walking around the block, will do the trick. In the summer when the pool is open I go and take a dip and swim a few laps. Of course, I have to go early to beat (or avoid beating up!) the kids.

Another fad low-carb diet appeared in the early 1970s in a book entitled, _Martinis and Whipped Cream: The New Carbo-Cal Way to Lose Weight and Stay Slim_, by Sidney Petrie with Robert B. Stone, ISBN: 0-13-559740-4 / 0135597404. I don't know the history of Atkins diet, but this may have been a precursor. Tried it for a week and became ill enough to be hospitalized. Low carbs and I don't mix.

A balanced diet with moderate exercise? You're gonna end up fat as a cow! The only way to do it is to starve yourself all day, and then stand in front of the fridge, eating little tiny slivers of chocolate cake until the whole thing is gone. Oh - with skim milk to wash it down...

Maybe they should take into account that different people have different digestive systems. I have some food allergies and a lactose intolerance that make an Aitkens style diet hard on my system. I cannot eat much dairy and don't do well with cold cuts and fatty foods. My wife had problems with carbs. She does not eat potatoes, rice or bread, and eats only limited amounts of things made from flour. She eats a lot of butter, cheese, bacon, cold cuts and a lot of meat. She manages to stay slim and fit and has not cholesterol problems.
Her father had similar eating habits and was fit and active until he was almost 95.I was amazed at how he could have poached eggs with cheese every day for breakfast, along with toast and butter with gobs of honey. Then he would go out to a restaurant for lunch, and you can be sure the food would be high in fat and salt. Dinner was peanut butter and crackers with a martini. His diet would kill most people, but he thrived on it.

You became ill from cutting carbs? Let's say you were stranded on an island off the south pacific and all you had to eat was wild boar and leafy green vegetables. Are you saying you'd eventually become ill because you had to do without potatoes, rice and Cheeze-Its?
My MIL can't lo-carb either. It really does make her extremely sick. It's due to some of the medications she takes supposedly.
It's really a shame that she can't take different meds that wouldn't interfere with her system - I truly feel that she would greatly benefit from a lo-carb diet, if she could stomach it. <G> -- Cyndi <Remove a "b" to reply

My mother, whose father is a diabetic, has an issue with the "idea" of meat. She has what you call a weak stomach. She does eat beef and chicken occasionally but only if it's burned beyond recognition. Her default meal is mashed potatoes with rice, bread and corn. She knows she's doomed...

I strongly suspect the illness and the low-carb diet were unrelated. Even if there are certain long- term implications from reducing carbs, to become ill in just a week suggests to me that something else may have been the actual culprit. -- Donna A pessimist believes all women are bad. Your wife's and her father's health likely have nothing to do with diets and everything to do with genes - and there so far ain' no way we can change our genes.

Walking and eating nullifies calories. On my way to work I'll occasionally stop and get a muffin, then eat it for the 1/4 mile walk to work. No calories that way. The distance isn't important as long as you walk the whole time your eating.
