component industry (I have a collection of old French bikes and a horde of
spare parts).

The other evening I was out on my favorite beater, a 1977-79 Motobecane Le
Champion. I was chasing a guy of a CF bike up a short hill. I downshifted
to my 26T and started stomping on it. That's when I felt that ugly
sensations and noise of sucking a RD into the rear wheel. First time since
about 1973.

When I got home I decided to ease my sorrow and build up another beater. I
had the Le Champion field stripped down the bare frame in about 15
minutes.

I grabbed another Moto frame, a 1974-76 Grand Jubilee. I thought it had
Campy dropouts.... Nooo, it has the [censored] Huret dropouts with their
proprietary gear hanger.

Yeah, one of my Grand Jubiles has those, too. The 'claw' is too far
forward; probably only an issue with indexed shifting. Easily
remedied, too. I fashioned a plate with a new 'claw' out of a
washer , placed it between the dropout and the RD. My other, slightly
newer GJ has Campy dropouts.

I don't know that I am comfortable with you using a Le Champion as a
"beater". We may have to talk.

A Dremel, flat file, and about 10 minutes and that will handle a SLJ
with ease.

Yeah, after thinking about it I came up with that idea too. I have some of
the washers with a lip that came on the Huret "bolt on" gear hangers - the
kind that fall off when you remove the wheel and the chain gets twisted
and....

I'm going to modify it to work with an old Suntour Cyclone RD.

I have a complete almost NOS set of Jubilee derialleurs. Back in the day I
built up a 17+ Lb. steel time trial bike. The Jubilee FD broke on the
first ride so they went back into stock and I switched to something
stronger.

The other option would be to find a Huret Success or ECO RD. They were
ugly but worked really well for friction shifters.

Beater in the sense that I got the frame NOS in 1984 with a lot of chips
and scratches so I've ridden it more indiscrimently. Over the years my
pristine bikes have tended to remain hanger queens because I didn't want
to get them dirty or scratched up.

The LC had a set of Stronglight 105bis cranks, and somne great 1975
vintage componets: 1st generation Suntour Cyclone derailleurs, 1st
generation Weinmann Carrera brakes, a true 21.9mm metric Cinelli 1/a stem
and so on.

Huret gear hanger - a true Maginot specimen of French glory.

I have to make up a special washer with a tab on it in order for a
standardized derailleur to work. Maybe I could find an old Huret Allvit
RD.....

The French are enthralled with Jerry Lewis, the Japanese are enthralled
with old Huret junk. ;-)

transportation with the auto in storage. From shade tree auto mechanic
experience, where were the parts coming from? OOS in oakland?
