Last weekend I tried to run home from work. The route took me from Long
Beach to La Habra Heights, in So California. It runs about 30 miles.
Do not attempt it - it is too tough. Not only is the terrain difficult,
but one needs to bring copious water, food, and weapons to defend
yourself against the homeless people.
I started up the river trail that runs parallel to the 605 freeway. I
took it all the way to the rose hills exit in Whittier.(about 20
miles).
The trail is fine, except for the various tent cities I had to
traverse. After the 105, the trail is teeming with wayward toothless
schizophrenics on bicycles. They were very interested in me - a 6'3"
white guy wearing purple shorts.
I felt fine up to rose hills. THen I headed east into the hills and
everything unravelled on me. I ran out of water, and my hands started
tingling. On my long runs, I usually do the tough climbing first. The
late ascents got the better of me, and the heat was rising. I started
to hear critters moving beside me in the brush. I worried about a
mountain lion getting the better of me in my delirious state. I made it
to Hacienda Heights before calling my wife to pick me up. As the crow
flies, I was only about 2 miles from home, but couldn't do the last
series of climbs. From Rose Hills, it is about 10 miles of meandering
fire roads to La Habra Heights.
My suggestion to other So Cal runners: don't attempt it without
satisfactory preparation and significant emotional fortitude.

What about the air pollution?

Air pollution is not bad until you get further north in L.A. County.
La Habra Heights is the northmost Orange County.
Recent rains have cleaned up things too. -
I run every day in this [censored], so I am used to it
Sometimes I take albuterol -

avoid the denizens. A runner I met was jumped by some gang-bangers, beat-up
and robbed on one of those river bike paths (Ballona Creek, not far from
tony Marina Del Rey). However, you seem to be new at longer runs, am I correct? My ultra buddies
and I always plan water-refill and snack stops every 1-2 hours on our runs.
If you've followed any of the hydration threads on this group, you know that
you can sweat 20-40 or more oz/hour. For me that means that I like to
refill no less than every 90 minutes.Sometimes on group runs, we will stash water and gatorade at strategic spots
the day before. If you learn the formula of food, liquid and salt replenishment, and go
easy, you can cover a lot of ground without running out of gas.If you can run a 20 miler, you can certainly do 30, but it means that you
have to slow it down, walk the steeper grades, and eat, drink and replenish
salt.Quoted message said:

marathon, I decided to run 27 miles. Heck, I could do 20, and 7 miles is a
snap. So 20 + 7 should be no big deal. Had to call the wife at mile 23.
Didn't even want to walk the last 4 miles, I was so beat. So, been there,
done that...-- Dan

I also almost never carry more money than for a phone call.
But determined people could lay a trap.
Panhandlers still ask for money, even though runners are probably
carrying little of it.Speaking of carrying things, I now try to carry a medical insurance
card,
which doubles as an ID. I carry last year's as long as it has the same
account number. Fortunately my state makes it illegal to put SS# on
the
card to reduce theft problems losing a card.
I was on a group run last year where someone had a epilectic fit
and required head stitches from the concrete impact.
(Sunlight through tree leaves or fence rails can trigger this.)
Not everyone in the group knew the persons full name and no one
knew the health insurance. A wrong emergency room could result
delays or high charges. -

wouldn't call to find out insurance info before transport.

huh?Ruined it? How about a history lesson. Several years ago you putz's
challenged me, I took you up on it, and I won. You ran away like the
cowards you are. Then we had the threats like "we're going to get you

and kid to walk away, and I turned to face them and they looked into
my eyes, they [censored] in their kilts and left. I never saw anyone come
within 50' of me after that.
Now years later you come here crying? Too f'ing bad arsewipe.
Now go blow, and squeeze your bags.

huh?Besides, you know full well John Mitchell destroyed that newsgroup
with his 1,000 ID's. Just as he is trying to do here by impersonating
me.

His mistake was slowing to a stop when they blocked the path. One punch to
the side of his head did a number on him, and it took him months to recover.Knowing what I know now, I'd probably turn around and run like hell (nothing
like a fartleck motivated by being jumped!).Reminds me of a strategy I read by an advanced bar-fighter: If confronted
by a bigger guy or a group, say:"OK, I'm going to count to 3. One"
....then take off and run like the wind. They will be confused as hell for a
several seconds.Good idea about the health ins card.
