Watching the prologue and there was a guy warming up on the rollers and he had white tubes/plugs sticking out of his nose. I'm used to seeing the Breathe Right strips, but I don't know what those tubes/ plugs are for. Are they medicated to open the air passages or something? If so, with what?

There's some old school cycling wisdom that says if you have a cold, blocking your nose during your warm up will raise the temperature in their just enough to kill the germs you have. I'm sure it does not work as advertised, but it might also get things flowing a little more freely in there, which might make you feel better for a few minutes afterward.

I asked my nephew and he said there's either menthol or eucalyptus oil on the tubes - not plugs - to help clear the nasal passages. That makes sense to me. I wonder if they'll be banning menthol or eucalyptus oil...

Cyclocross guys have done that forever, warmup with a wad of cotton or tissue up the nose with a drop of some oil on it. Think Vicks Vaporub for pro riders.

It's funny because one bit of advice medical folks give for fighting exercise-induced asthma (which we know tons of the pros suffer from by looking at their medical prescriptions) is to breathe solely through your nose for the first half-hour or so, on the thought that air inhaled through the mouth is dryer and thus more likely to irritate the lungs/breathing passages.--Shayana Kadidal
Must be uncomfortable to be wearing nose plugs during warm up. I've only encountered a few folks having these on over the years. I really don't understand if they truly provide any benefits to the user. Personally, I would never use them even if I did have a cold. I would simply warm up at a more relaxed pace.
It's an old practice based on a faulty premise. If anything you will make a cold or allergy worse by doing it.
How does it work? Obviously I'm guessing the practice is to make you breathe through your mouth only but when you're warming up or the body is being put under load you're gonna want to get as much air into your lungs as possible right?
I'm sure it does not perform as promoted, but it might also get factors streaming a little more easily in there, which might cause you to experience better for a few moments subsequently.
