Noob chainring question

Is this what you had in mind? Check the second page in the link for a picture of [font=Arial]Dr. Allan Abbott's Land Speed Record Bicycle. I can't find the link that tells about how big that chainring is, but I know he pedaled to 138.8 MPH drafting a racecar. That record has since been broken by John Howard who did 152.2 MPH.[/font]

If you look closely at the picture, there's an extra bb mounted behind the seat, and the gears are staged. I've used a similar setup on some faired recumbents to get a 9:1 ratio out of stock parts. The biggest ring you can put on a road bike before you have shifting problems is about 53 teeth. I've seen some that were custom cnc machined in the 70-90 tooth range, but they only work as a single ring.

Sorry, should have been a little more clear. That's the bike John Howard set his record on. Dr. Allan Abbott's bike, that the old record was set on, is pictured at the top of the second page. Just scroll down to the bottom of the first page and click on "continue".🙂

It sure is. 🙂 What kind of hub is that in the rear? I've never seen the chain placed outside of the seatstay.
