Having failed to avoid 7 goatheads in my last 22 rides, I was
pedalling along my daily ride, alert for such hazards when . . .
Okay, I wasn't pretending that anyone can spot goatheads at 30 feet
per second, but at least I was awake enough to notice this less-common
road hazard, stop, and take some pictures:

The road hazard is only about a foot long, so full size may help.
Usually, adult road hazards of this species are only glimpsed as they
wriggle off wildly.
Only the very young of this species (like this one) will lie limp and
still and hope not to be seen when a bicyclist stops and walks back to
admire them.
Then they coil like this before wisely wriggling away:

Full size, you can see the head pointing to the left, mostly obscured
by the drooping grass.
Yes, the head is larger than a goathead.
No, the teeth aren't large enough to puncture bicycle tires.
