Nominations for best all purpose/training tire

In my opinion, unless you ride on particularly crappy roads most of the time, life is too short to ride on [censored] tyres 🙂

For the most part, riding harder compound tyres on decent roads is simply horrible, and, as I said life is too short to spend 80% of my riding time on yucky tyres. 🙂 It takes away too much of the pleasure. And, looking at the "rolling numbers" on the first link, it looks like i'll have to latex tubes for all my bikes :p

Michelin Pro Race (or Pro Race 2) give reasonable wear and ride nicely

For other tyres, here are a couple of good lists to work through, inlcuding rolling resistance

Michelin Pro Race 2 are not a popular tire here, well not as a general training tire. most people find that they don't wear very well, mainly a they get a flat spot along the centre line fairly quickly which reduces their handling and cornering, plus they are a little to easy to puncture

That is very suprising in my experience. I have over 3500 miles on my current set of Pro Race 2 and have used them in the past for both my wife and my bikes for many years. I have only had one flat in all of my years. Regarding the wear in the center line, that occurs in the rear with most tires. I guess if the material was very hard it might not wear as much but the handling would be very poor.
