  1. Last Fall I converted my friction shifting bike over to Campy Ergo. I have an
all Centaur Triple group with the exception of a Chorus crankset and bottom
bracket. I have about 700 miles on the new drive train and it shifts perfectly
but I am experiencing a strange noise from the crank area. Occasionally when I
stop pedaling for a few seconds and then start up again, there is a sound that
is almost like a metalic object striking the crankset. Besides the sound, I can
feel the vibration through the pedals. Other riders can hear it several feet
away. It is quite loud. It seems to mainly occur when I am in the middle
chainring and it does not matter what cog I am on in the back. The bottom
bracket has been checked as well as the chainring bolts and pedals. All are
torqued properly. The Campy chain has been lubricated every 75 miles with White
Lightning. Has anyone experience this? My experience goes back to the friction
shifting days and I know very little about these new systems. The bike is a
    1979 Gios Torino Super Record.

That's usually a fastener. When you 'checked the chainring
bolts', did you grease the thread? Ditto for BB cups if it
isn't the chainring bolts. An experienced mechanic can
usually tell you from the tone of the click which it is.

I say-I would also check the freehub pawls to see all are engaging, none are
damaged, in addtion to what Andy suggested.

I had the same thing on my chorus double Crank/bb. Always thought it was
strange, especially feeling that little bump vibe, like the thing was
loose or something. Asked on the newsgroup before, answers were mostly
what you would expect...remove, torque correctly etc. Believe me, I
tried everything. Could never work it out. Hit by car and totaled before
ever finding the cause. Next bike has different crankset. Good luck

Sounds like something I experienced. I checked everything to make sure
they were tight. I could have sworn it was coming form the crank/bb
area. It turns out that my cassette lockring was not tightened enough.

I also did the same...my lockring also needed tightening, but the
problem was still there. I never considered the rear hub pawls being
    bad, as Peter suggested.

I rechecked everything today. I removed the BB and it looked fine. The
chainring bolts were all tight too. The pedals also. I did find that the
cassette lock ring was not torqued to specs. I have my doubts whether it was
loose enough to cause that loud of noise. I'll try it tomorrow when the rain
stops. The wheels were purchased when I did the upgrade so they only have 700
miles on them. Can a chain cause this problem. The sound can be duplicated if
you lightly tap the big chainring with a wrench. Really strange

    Really strange

    Neal

    Dave recalled:
Neal, The older Campy 10s chain used a connecting link that had rather soft
pins. After several hundred or several thousand (depended on hills) miles
they would make a loud click every time they came under load at the rear
sprocket. This sound came from the crank which could really be likened to a
    sounding board in this case.

That sound drove me crazy for about 2000 miles before Peter helped me figure
out and correct it by using a newer connecting link.

I had a similar problem and checked all of the same things people have
suggested. It turned out to be the connecting link I was using on the Campy
chain. I changed to Wipperman chains with their connecting link and have
    not had that problem since.

The Wipperman chains are silent, shift well, and last a long time if you
keep them clean. The link is secure and very easy to open with no tools.
I get them from Lickton's for a reasonable price.

I think you are correct about the source of the noise. The LBS agrees with you
too. These are Bontrager Race lite wheels and Trek is sending a replacement
freehub this week. Hopefully the replacement will solve the problem.
