"Some of my best lap times for the 400 were after the 350 mark.
From 380Ks until the end I was lapping one guy every lap and the faster riders every third or fourth lap.
When the crowd at the start/finish line started to YELL and CLAP for me every time I came around,
this just helped me dig deeper and push harder, I was now smiling and happy to be so near the end of the epic race.
With 10Ks to go I ran out of water I didn’t think this was such a big deal but maybe the painful post-race cramping could have been avoided if I did drink more.

Pedal powered and two wheels in a single-track - the NoCom certainly

It's a bicycle, but it's not legal for competition in most forms of
racing. Nor is it likely to be. And where it *is* legal, it may not
be the best choice; speed isn't always everything.

It is a pretty cool looking machine, but fastest is relative to where you're
riding it. Let us know when someone uses it to break 10:50 on that course.

The NoCom, however, will never be ridden to break a USCF record,
because it's not legal for USCF competition. Its speed relative to
USCF bikes is, therefore, irrelevant to USCF-bike events and riders.

I don't think this one fits any reasonable definition of a "stock
bike"; it's still in the realm of exotic custom hardware. Calling it
"stock" is like calling a Lingenfelter Corvette "stock". Sure, if
you've got enough money, you can call up and have one delivered...but
to the majority of the world, "stock" implies "produced identically in
large numbers, using equipment not radically different from others,
and widely available from dealer inventory". It's an exotic. That
there's more than one of it is not, in itself, enough to make it
"stock" for any common classification of bikes.

This is the definition of "Stock" that "Johnny NoCom" is referring to:

"STOCK - Vehicles in this class may have any number of wheels.
Vehicle/frame design may not incorporate any form of fairing which is
not an integral part of the frame. Specifically, brazed on, welded on,
or epoxied on integral parts of the frame which do not divert airflow
around the rider are allowed. Wheel discs/covers are allowed. Supplied
number plates do not constitute a fairing. Rider is male or female of
    any age."

    <http://www.recumbents.com/hpra/rulesand.htm>

Specialty venue, specialty rules. The Nocom flunks on both parts (b)
and (e) of the rules governing USCF-legal bicycle characteristics for
general competition use. It would not be permitted in a
USCF-sanctioned recumbent race either, due to its flunking (b).

Johnny Nocom compared it to USCF-legal bikes. That's where his
assertion is nonsensical. It's not even legal for USCF *recumbent*
racing. As such, it can't set or break a USCF record; it may be used
to turn in better times than those in the record books, but the
    records will remain unbroken regardless.

(A close reading of the USCF rules makes me wonder how the Trek
Madone's seat tube design hasn't caused it to be protested. Of
course, there may be some "whatever is good for Trek is good for bike
    racing" philosophy involved...)

I do not believe that "Johnny NoCom" ever mentioned or implied USCF
rules or records - he was comparing the Velokraft NoCom to all other
    unfaired bicycles.

An organization has been formed to sanction records for bicycles that
fall outside of the narrow definitions of the traditional organizations
    [1]: <http://www.wisil.recumbents.com/wrra/default.htm>. The Velokraft
NoCom fits the WRRA definition of "Unfaired".

Admittedly, the number of people involved in such racing worldwide less
than show up to a single USCF event near a major urban area, but that
has no relevance to the argument at hand.

[1] As these organizations believe in comparing riders at the expense of
    technical innovation.

If the machine's the thing, fine, but in bike racing, the power comes
from the rider; to make it a race instead of a demonstration, the
machines need to be equal, or at least nearly so.

    technical innovation.

If the machine's the thing, fine, but in bike racing, the power comes
from the rider; to make it a race instead of a demonstration, the
machines need to be equal, or at least nearly so.

Why not let the best combination of bicycle and rider win? Making it a
"competition of riders" is neither morally superior nor morally inferior
to a "competition of bicycles and riders". However, the "competition of
riders is for the most part a technological dead end.

What is the bizarre psychopatholgy that causes some people who are fans

I just don't get it. We're all in this together...

    Sheldon,

Think of "Johnny NoCom" as the recumbent version of Fabrizio Mazzoleni. 🙂
